You better hope it's not the master cylinder. They cannot be repaired and cost like $1000. But IMO it sounds like you should of changed your brake pads a while ago. How many miles do you have on these pads/rotors?
Plenty. How often are you supposed to change pads?

when they begin to squeel when applying the brake.

Are you planning on fixing it yourself or taking it to a shop?
Shop. I wouldn't have a clue how to fix it myself.
A sudden loss of brake pedal pressure is usually a sign of a hydraulic problem, but not always. I have seen a few cars act like this when there front brake pads worn down to the point where they were contacting the rotors. I would get your brakes inspected then post an update if you still need advise.

$1000?

It seems cheaper than domestic, but the install is going to kill ya.

It REALLY depends on the driver/driving conditions. Personally, I am 44K and my pads are still fine. Some people get to 60K and beyond with no problems, really depends on the driver.

That's good news, but if that's all that's happening I think you can do better. New FRONT oem rotors on your car and pads will cost $220. Rears are a good bit cheaper. See if you can find a local mechanic to do it for less. How much labor is the shop charging? I don't doubt that it's probably what a nissan mechanic would generally charge on your car for rears, but if you're feeling cheap you can do better.

For parts you can do.....

Advance
Rotors $28 each
Pads
Wearever $19
Raybestos $32

AutoZone
Rotors $13 each
Pads
Albany $19
Raybestos $30

I would charge about $190-$220 (rough estimate without seeing car) Or do it yourself for less then $100

Oh well, I already told him to go ahead with it. Guess he IS ripping me off. :(

I'm still wondering why it would go out as suddenly as it did? I'm no mechanic by any means, but I would think if the pads were going out, it'd happen over time.

I would use you! Well, I'm getting ripped off pretty bad, but hey that's life. I wouldn't have a clue how to do it myself.
