Sales Tax is 8.25% in all places that I have been in the Dallas area. (both highland park, downtown, and in various parts of mass suburbia in north dallas)

8.25%? Ok. thats no so bad, I mean its only 1% more than Cali. Also, the no-state-tax thing kind makes up for it.

If California is where your life, friends, family are, the first thing you have to do is decide whether you want to change that. You may want to scout for other jobs in your area before you decide.

Good luck. 🙂

Yes, its most likely we'll stay here. but I want to weigh the options fully so that we don't miss out on something. A 600K house here cost 150K=200K in Dallas, no joke. And the Dallas house would actually have a lawn.

I went to Dallas last year...I loved every second of it.

My grand parents are from Fort Worth (so is my dad, but we live in STL now).

I go there about once a year. Its a nive town. Friendly people, for the most part. Bad drivers, but hey, its a big city like any other.

It gets HOT there in the summer. But it stays dry, so now humidity to kill you. You get used to it pretty quickly.

A good town. And, it sound like you have a good job there. Go for it.

Edit, I live in the tornado area too, STL not as much as texas, but we see them.

Personally, I'd take a toranodo over living in California any day.

That said, tornado's aren't a big deal. You get warnings for them, you hear sirens. The weather guys can't predict a twister, but they can tell you when conditions are right for them. As long as you excersize basic safety, like getting into your basement on time, you won't get hurt at all. Tornados don't really like cities, anyway, all those building mess up the airflow. Over a 1000000000000 acre farm, yeah, you'll see some big ones once in a while, but you usually get only little ones that break windows and knock down dead trees when you are near a city.

Just keep in mind that things are rough in IT now.A job in the hand is worth plenty even if it's in a crappy place.I'd love to work in Cali,me and about 100,000 other admin's at this point in time.

Only been there for a couple of business trips, but I'll give you one bit of advice. Don't jaywalk in Dallas. I crossed a street against a red light at 6:30AM and there wasn't a car in sight for a half-mile. A beat cop called me over and the only reason I didn't get a ticket is because I was from out of town (plus I think he was so stunned that I did it right in front of him, he figured something was strange).

I moved from L.A. to Dallas for a year and a half. I hated it there. Too hot, too republican, too conservative, too bible-belty, too many gun-toting freaks, too many steer horns on the fronts of pickups.

Hrm, there are some really interesting opinions going on here. I'm glad everyone is giving the reasons why they don't like it there.

I live in Plano and have my whole life. If you have a family, Plano and the surrounding burbs are a nice place to raise a family. Great school system, especially in the Plano area. Plus it has the nicest roads and amenities (lots of public libraries, really nice recreation centers)

Dallas is awesome, you'll love it here.

hey nice nod to the public libraries, a great-uncle of mine in a librarian in the Dallas area.. maybe even plano ? cant remember

*edit* ok its the Oak Lawn dallas public library, google = god ?

Don't go to Dallas. Their footbal team is a bunch of pvssies and convict wannabe's.

Wow, such insight. I'm totally sold on your reasoning and I assure you that should I feel the urge to move to Dallas, I'll review the background of their sports teams before I make my decision.

I actually might try to talk the company into flying us out there so we can scout/check things out.

kranky -

You didn't happen to jaywalk over lightrail tracks, did you? The will nail you for that EVERY TIME! First of all, they aren't real cops (just transit police that are really pathetic) and the trains have a tendency to hit and kill people....and jaywalking is a leading cause of that.
