...that the corporate HQ in Dallas has decided to move our department (technology) there.

I'm in need to help! I have a few questions. (Cliff notes at the end, full story follows)

So he called to tell me that bad news. The only details he had for me were, " We (all 500 employees) have anywhere from 60 days to 13 months, depending on the individual. I wanted to get ahold of you before you got to work so you didnt walk into this. I'm sorry, I don't have any more information other than you have a meeting with HR at 3:50pm." God, I didnt know what to say. I was speechless. As some of you know, I'm getting married (check my sig) next year, so my initial thoughts after hanging up were concerning the wedding and my fiancee. I already felt like I let her down. After all, my fiancee and I are paying for everything and this would drastically effect it! I sat down, gathered my thoughts, and called my fiancee to let her know that there was a possibility my job could be gone in 60 days, worst case scenario. I beleive in being open about everything and besides, she deserves to know about this. She took the news well and assured me that we would do "what ever it takes to get the wedding to work....even if that means running off to Vegas" (how cool is she?!).

I went to work roughly 2 hours later and awaited my meeting with HR. Everyone at work was expectantly quiet and unusocial. I double checked the schedule to make sure I was at 3:50 and to see which HR personel I would be meeting with. Great, my meeting was at 3:50, but it was with the HR manager. Her reputation proceeded her, and was not good at all. I was a bit nervous to be honest with you.

At 3:50 pm I went upstairs and met with the HR lady. She informed me that my job would be expiring here in Q4 fiscal year. Not quite sure where exactly where that landed, she informed me that that falls under March-May of next year (!). "Yes!", I screamed in my head. She said, "this contract asures you that you will have a job with us until Q4, and that this is what your severance package includes." Curious about if the NOC was moved sooner than planned, I asked her some questions about this binding contract. she informed me, " If we move operations sooner, say December 31st -then we have to pay you until March. This is a binding agreement." I was so excited and happy that I was going to be employed for another year.

I walked back down stairs and bumped into the VP of technology. She said "Hey, I need to talk to you!" (I swollowed my tongue! Oh no, they want to pull back my date and fumble the contract! I thought). She said "But not now....give me two hours. We must discuss something".

Two hours later I show up at her office and sit down. Turns out they want to take me to Dallas with them and wanted to know if I would be up for that. Wow, wasnt expecting this! I screamed, "Yes!" internally again. I mean, I was already excited at the fact that they were guarenteeing my employment for a year. I told her I would consider it, but would need to see the paper work, the offer, and discuss this with my fiancee. Wooo hooo! So happy now! The future is looking bright! But, I do have some questions for you Dallas/Texas guys!

Cliff Notes
- Boss calls and informed me that our department is being relocated to another state, Dallas. My job could be over within 60 days.
- I get to work and talk to HR for more info, and they inform me that I have until March of next year, YAY!.
- I bump into VP of technology going back to my desk, she wants to see me in her office for a meeting.
- At meeting she informs me that the company wants to bring me to Dallas with them, and will move me there. All other details have not been formalized yet.

Questions!

Here is my question for you Dallas guys.

1) What is Dallas like?
2) I live in California right now. Anyone moved from Cali to Texas or more specifically, Dallas?
3) Sales tax in Cali is 7.75%. Sales tax in Texas is 6.26%, correct?
4) There is no state tax? If so, then that means I would be getting a pseudo "raise" in pay.
5) Whats housing like out there? I looked a little on the web and saw some good prices.
6) Whats the weather like there?
7) Is there really tornados?
8) If so, how bad?
9) What are the schools like? I've heard some good things.
10) Are the lakes there nice?
11) What are the people like?
12) Anyhting else you can tell me?

Thanks in advanced guys!

Congrats! (well sort of) Texas is way way cheaper than CA! They may pay less because of that, though hopefully they won't. The schools & people are all nice. I've been to Austin a few times, but not Dallas. Dallas is a booming area for business though!

What's your dear fiance say about this?

I have family in Dallas. I have visited them before and loved it. Very nice people and very clean (from what I saw.)

Be warned though, everything is bigger in Texas. Your pretty little fiance might find a replacement for you :p

Good luck! I have never faced a decision like yours, and I hope I dont have to.

Yea, my pay will stay the same (nice!!). Fiancee and I have not had a chance to really talk about this. I don't even know if I want to do it. I want to research it and talk to some people (like you).

If I were you I'd offer to move early. But then again I absolutely HATE California so I'd take any chance at all to get out of there. Not that'd I'd ever go there to begin with, but thats another story..... ;)

1) What is Dallas like?
I was born in Dallas and my family is all there.. nothing overly outrageous or special but its Big D.. feels like home :)

2) I live in California right now. Anyone moved from Cali to Texas or more specifically, Dallas?
n/a

3) Sales tax in Cali is 7.75%. Sales tax in Texas is 6.26%, correct?
who knows, i think its up to each city ? but i thought it was over 7

4) There is no state tax? If so, then that means I would be getting a pseudo "raise" in pay.
correct no state taxes

5) Whats housing like out there? I looked a little on the web and saw some good prices.
*shrug* haven't lived in dallas since childhood but my family's homes are all fine

6) Whats the weather like there?
beautiful.. very hot in the summer. mild winters, rare snow

7) Is there really tornados?
yes.. but not in the DFW area. torando alley is the panhandle and northward. had them every year i lived in amarillo (tx panhadle)

8) If so, how bad?
nothing earth shattering.. again living in dallas you shouldn't worry. while hurricanes tend to produce wide-spread moderate damage, tornadoes can dispense sudden incredible destructive power, but limited in area comparitvely

9) What are the schools like? I've heard some good things.
far as I know, ok.. but can't vouch for this one. i left dallas in elementray school, and the only other school age person woulda been my uncle who is a few years older than me who went to private school

10) Are the lakes there nice?
whiterock lake is about the extent of my dallas lake experience.. not bad

11) What are the people like?
Friendly.. almost always! its our state motto. heard of southern hospitality ?
Be prapared for a total 180 in social and political attitudes. thats more because Cali is wacko compared to just about anyone else ;) Austin is a very liberal bastion in this very conservative state.. but not dallas

12) Anyhting else you can tell me?
congrats

Come on to Dallas. I live here, lots of other fellow ATer's live around here.
1. Its nice
2.
3. Sales tax varies city to city. I think that is right for Dallas, not sure. Most cities somewhere between 6% and 7%.
4. No state income tax, correct and your money will go further here anyway cause of cost of living.
5. Good prices compared to Cali, you can get a mansion here for what you pay for a nice 3 bedroom there, almost...
6. We get a little of all four seasons, no extremes really but the atmosphere is sometimes unstable so we do get thunderstorms.
7. Yes there is a chance, but very rare. Esp in Dallas.
8. We had one tornado hit dowtown Fort Worth a few years ago, no causalties. If you pay attention to the news you should never have a problem with tornados.
9. Schools vary just like anywhere else I imagine.
10. There are nice lakes. If you find summer crowding you can travel a little further to access less crowded ones.
11. Dallas traffic sucks but it may be a little better compared to southern Cali. Cali traffic really sucks... In general though really friendly people.
12. Great arts and nightlife around Dallas and Fort Worth...

1) What is Dallas like?

It's the city that has no reason to exist, really. I like it.

2.) Lived in CA & moved?

Nope, can't help you htere

3.) Sales tax,

More or less, varies from county to county

4.) No state tax

Correct:D

5.) Housing

Cheaper than CA, prob 40% cheaper

6.) Weather

Moderate ~3 months/year, then wet, cold or blistering hot.

7.) Tornados?

Yep, just don't buy a house where there has ever been a tornado, they seem to follow a pattern

8.) tornados how bad?

They kill people, but mostly property damage.

9.) Schools

Pretty good, College or earlier?

10.) Lakes

Crowded, but ok.

11.) People

Different, but we're a likeable bunch:D

12.) anything else?3

If you can get over not living in CA (& I hear it's nice), it's pretty cool here, there's something for everyone if you look.

Oh by the way..

if you are into computers (being here kinda suggests that)
you HAVE TO GO TO the First Saturday sale... parking lots full of joy at 3am smack in the middle of downtown.

Um, we do have tornados in the DFW area: http://www.dallassky.com/fwtornado.htm

First Saturday's OK, but it's more of a social thing than any real deals, I've been to a bunch of them, can't beat the sausage on a stick:D

OH CRIZAP @ that link! Last tornado was in 2000?

Yep.

Please don't let that scare you though, just being honest...
