Bullshit. A good employee will let his/her boss know if they are under tasked.

I agree in that sense, but I don't feel that I have to run to my boss every time I run out of work. I'm different I guess... (read: lazy)

in that case think of your job as if you were a security guard. You're around just in case something should ever happen cos the company can't afford for anything to go wrong.

If you insist on doing something for the company, you can take initiative and introduce some new technology (office 2010, Windows 7, etc)

You should pat yourself on the back. To genuinely have nothing to do is quite the accomplishment. Otherwise you may simply be putting things off forever like me...

LOL, well I've had people like you working for me over the years. Needless to say, they were the first people that got cut when things got a little tight.

Thats mostly how I have viewed it recently, I actually tried to talk my boss into upgrading to office 2010 and id really like to get everyone using office communicator, I do have things ld like to do but I work for a poor non profit and my budget is pretty lame.

Now as far as being laid off for being lazy or not working that much I HIGHLY doubt that will happen. If they laid off their only IT guy they would have a hell of a time trying to add new users to the domain, setting up new computers, or doing about a million other things that I dont have to do often but are kind of important. My big fear about going to my boss every day and telling him I have nothing to do is that ill get eaten up into the accounting department and end up doing their work(I really dont want to get stuck doing data entery for them), so id just as soon stay quiet while things are good.

I'm doing car rentals right now. Recently got transferred to a lower volume store after a position opened up there. Boring yes but considering I'm underpaid anyway, I don't mind. It's seasonal too so fall is always a slow time. Nobody traveling or moving right now, so we're quiet. At least until the first snowfall when we get inundated with insurance rentals. :p

I've been in the same situation. I was put in a department with a ton of problems and every swinging dick in the place watching me work all day every day because the sky was falling. Over about a year's time me and another guy solved all the problems to where I had maybe one repair every other day. When I asked my boss a couple of times to bring me back into the die room to work on stuff he about turned white, thinking back to how it was and all the shit he used to have to take and said, no you stay right here. I don't want to hear that they can't find you. I got really good at chess back then.

Are you at the patent office?

EDIT: NM. I see you are in SE Ohio.

Are you with patent agency?

I didn't have a science undergrad (MIS) so no Pat Bar for me. I am in PI rather than IP. :D

I've been in IT for about 12 years now and you learn to work hard and play hard. I look forward to the easy weeks because I know an 80 hour one is around the corner. Early in my career I used the vast amounts of downtime to learn new skills. At one point, I spent at least 6 hours a day building an operation's dashboard in classic ASP and SQL Server7. That really paid off years later when I got into application and database development.

The things that frustrate me is a company that can't decide on priorities so you spend your time waiting for a decision on what to do.

I didn't think it was possible, but it looks like Spaceman has mated with FritoLays...and skim milk is their offspring...

I'm also IT

Mondays and Tuesdays are insane. I'm doing *something* 95%+ of my day.

Wednesday are hit or miss, usually have some time to browse AT but not a ton

Thursdays are usually slow, I deal with backups, updates, checking logs etc

Fridays are generally almost dead.

This. Plus, if you're that bored, do something worthwhile with your time. learn a new skill or come up with a new solution for something that could be done "faster".

My last job used to be like this. Most days I'd be sitting around waiting for something to break and other days I'd have so much shit to do I couldn't even take a break.

That explanation should work well when they decide to lay him off because he doesn't have enough work to keep him busy...

And you folks bitch about lazy union workers...

Doesn't matter, the lay you off no matter how busy you are.

Me thinks thou does not see the cliff that abuts thee...

Depending on the industry, IT can easily scapegoated as into being nothing but a cost center. All it takes is an executive with a mission to slash and an innocuous IT department and bye bye cushy job. This is not always the case mind you but IT can easily back themselves into that corner if they are not careful. Being ignored when proposing infrastructure improvements, or worse, being re-tasked, could signal your eventual demise.

I say you find something to do. I worked for a factory during a summer doing materials transportation (aka transferring stuff between the factory and machine shops around town).

I had some down time, so I asked around and found stuff to do. I ended up organizing some of the metal supply. I moved some racks around. I completely cleaned out the back lot (two big trucks full of scrap metal).

I dunno. I'm the kind of person who can't sit still. Being lazy bothers me.

Create problems. Leave little timebombs that will really mess up one or two machines a day. That will give you something to do and make a better case for you the next time you want a raise.
