My body was absolutely destroyed by mites!

I went to a blackberry farm the other day (maintained by a friend-of-a-friend, but that's not at issue) to pick as around 14 gallons (I didn't weigh it) of berries for a wine I am making. Like a city moron I went out there in shorts and sandals, because I honestly hadn't considered the possibility of being devoured by microscopic sycophants.

Anyway, fast forward ~12 hours and I wake up feeling like someone beat me with one of those tiny wooden bats you get at baseball games. I have huge welts all over my legs and the side of my body, and they are so numerous that they look like a solid mass at a short distance.

I don't know unequivocally that it was mites, but I can only assume it was some microscopic Arachnida constituent. I didn't think they could cause this level of damage.

I didn't want (sy|e)mpathy, but I would like to know if anyone has ever experienced such a thing. Also, the wine is turning out nicely thanks for my suffering.

I like that wording.

And sucks that you got bit. I currently have a bite on my lower right leg which is apparently from a spider which has venom I'm allergic to (no idea what spider, didn't catch the specimen). Nothing life-threatening (it's not a black widow or anything like that, probably just some house spider I'm allergic to) but the first day I had it it DID hurt and it is still very VERY red and swollen.

Sucks for you. Burn the farm down, that'll show those mites :)
Nope, never had anything of that sort happen to me.

LOL, I figured someone would notice ;) It's a lot better than being repetitious.

I'm gonna have to throw a flag on the play for illegal use of the word "sycophant." The closest I can get is: "A base parasite; a mean or servile flatterer; especially, a flatterer of princes and great men."

And that's just too much of a stretch.

Yeah, you're probably right. I didn't know whether or not to call them parasites, so that's the word that came to mind. I'll change it if it makes you feel better :)

If you consider yourself a prince or a great man, and you consider their assault to be flattering, then by all means leave it as is :D

I'd say more along the lines of serfdom than a great man ;), but I obviously had a different perception of the word when I said it.

I was in error.

Mostly around the waistline, yeah. 90% of them are on my hips. I didn't think chiggers were so brutal? :)

They're horrible if you get them as bad as it sounds like you did, they itch like crazy

Yeah, I've never known anything to itch as bad.

I'll be more careful next time.

Even black widows won't kill you (unless you're like over 70, under 6) but will make it suck to be you. They're really really poisoness, but considering you get such a small amount, you won't die.
