Just the tip and muffler's endcap is made of inconel 600, right? The rest is stainless, 409 piping and 304 muffler.

Main exhaust: SUS409 1.2MM all stainless steel
Tailend (not just tail pipe): SUS304 + INCONEL 600

That's a translation issue between the US and Japanese markets.

tailend = tips (inconel)
silencer body = muffler (304 stainless)
main pipe = piping (409 stainless)

OPs car: I like it, pretty throaty for a 4 banger, got that pissed off chainsaw sound to it like a 3SGTE

RickUK: Thought I had a bee stuck inside my headphones

AdamK47: that gave me wood when he wound it out

Haha fart can. Now AdamK posted a link to a bad ass exhaust. I love that lumpy idle of a cammed V-8. Weed whackers can rev all they want, but when that 6.0 pulls up next to them at the line they got nothing.

fart can? Your anti-V8 sentiment shows.

Of course it's not like AMC's were the laughing stocks of the car world or anything.

Wow. The e46 M3 is a 'weed whacker' now?

My
sentiment shows? Pretty sure I'm pro v-8 when it comes to a performance car. Nothing cooler in my eyes than a nice small block that's been worked over. I'll give you props for trying to squeeze the horsepower out of a 4 banger but I just can't see how anybody finds that high pitched waaaaaa a pleasant exhaust note. It's not even that it's high pitched. F-1 cars have a high pitched exhaust note and those things just sound sick.

AMC wasn't a Chevy or Ford, but they sold more cars in the US than Datsun did back in the day. Datsun had the 240z as their "performance" car back in the golden days of muscle cars, lol. a 2.4 with 160hp. Pretty weak performance. Meanwhile AMC was cranking out AMX's and Javelin's with 390's and 401's not to mention the Hurst SC/Ramblers. I'm no AMC fanboi. I like them because I have one and I've picked up quite a bit on their history but AMC had their problems and idiots running the place at times just like any other car company.
Datsun/Nissan obviously had the better business plans with their designs for vehicles as they outlasted AMC. Of course they don't just build cars though. Pretty sure they've got everything from electronics to heavy construction equipment, so that probably carried them through the lean times.

The guy is a tard. Probably doesn't even own an AMC.

Don't know what he was explained about number of cars and the like above though.

Then goes on to F1 cars

I am doubting he can even drive.

Here is the BIG PERFORMANCE numbers those AMX's put out:
1971 304 210HP GROSS,
1972 304 150HP NET

360ci 175HP NET 2barrel
360ci 195HP NET 4barrel, single exhaust
360ci 220HP NET 4 barrel, dual exhaust

401ci 255HP
what a joke.

I am netting about 200HP at the crank like the above...around 150-160 at the wheels right now.

Also curb weight has a lot to do with power...they weigh about 3300-3400lbs, I am weighing in at about 2750.

go AMC!

You're comparing the stock AMC carburated cars from 1971 to your fuel injected and modified late 90's 240sx. Yeah, ok lets do that.

1st off you're specing the smallest V-8's AMC built. The 401ci put out 330bhp at the crank straight from the factory. I guess that 255hp is supposed to be at the wheels? The 390 put out 315hp. Not bad numbers considering the technology of the time. Horsepower to weight ratio on a 3400lb AMX with a 390 is about .092.

Now you've got a 240SX with large bore exhaust, fuel injected, most likely a CAI and maybe a few bolt ons like a tweaked throttle body putting you up to 200hp. At a curb weight of 2750 that puts horsepower to weight at .072. If you want to hang with the 40 year old American iron, you better get some more bolt ons for your Nissan.

You can use your "at the wheels" numbers if you want and the gap narrows but that AMX is still going to best you.

Argue all the horsepower/cubic inch of displacement you want, but start putting all those modern goodies like direct port fuel injection, electronic ignition, ceramic headers on the old school iron and you'll see those numbers really start to climb.

The old adage holds true. There's no replacement for displacement.

you brought up the old has been amc's...the 255 is net horsepower. Not at the wheels.

Sorry the 70's sucks for cars.

About displacement, didn't you bring up Formula 1 above?

Most people quote weight/hp really...I am at about 14lbs per HP...the 225hp mustangs at about 15.5.

I am turning a quarter at 90mph. My clutch and suspension limiting me from better times.

Also you can bolt all that stuff on that old iron and it's just a stuffed pig.

I can put a turbo on my ride or swap in an LS1 and smoke any old school car at just about any motorsports entry save ultimate 1/4 mile time.

Get with the times.

You can bolt a turbo to anything, replace an exhaust system, tear the guts out of the car to make it light and beat a bone stock muscle car in a quarter mile with some of the slowest cars out there. But stock vs stock, they're faster. Modified vs modified, they're faster. All things equal a car with more displacement will win a drag race every time.

With all the money thrown at nickel plated exhausts you could get yourself an AMC that will smoke the Nissan and won't sound like someone farting through a kazoo. You like the rice, I get it. I like the old school muscle. You spend your money on your Nissan, I'll keep spending mine on restoring my Rambler.

The only reason I brought up the F1 cars was to explain that there are times when high pitched exhausts notes don't sound like ass. That's pretty clear from what I posted above but I guess you're having a rough time thinking straight with that buzzing in your ears, lol.

And yes, I do have an AMC. It's a 1966 Rambler Classic 770. Belonged to my Grandfather and was given to me as my graduation gift so I could commute to college. Learned to work on cars by fixing it up to get it roadworthy. About 5 years ago I decided to pull the 232 straight six and drop in a 287. It's in storage now that I'm living in an apartment so restoration is on hold. Once I buy a house I'll be able to finish restoring it. Lots more to do.

Hmm if he's considering putting a LS1 in his Nissan I don't think hes trying to argue against V8s or displacement...

I don't think 1/4 mile is racing. I can get my car into 10-12's easily and still turn a great lap time.

Gotcha. So you're all about autocross and road racing.

I missed it above but you're looking at dropping an LS1-2 into the Nissan then? Yeesh! That would be retarded fast! Certainly would make it sound better too, lol. My vote is forget turbos and do this!
Sounds like doing it is a royal PITA though. From what I've read the steering rack is located in the wrong place so it has to be relocated which means customizing all your steering gear. Not too mention that's a hell of a torque upgrade. You probably have to get a beefier rear end too so you don't blow it up. Sounds like you already agree with me about displacement if you're thinking of doing this. I think you'd be better off buying a 2004 GTO then putting the time and effort into the Nissan though. Sounds like a challenging project nonetheless.
