ever considered going custom? you can get a comparably equipped bike with custom geometry for not much more $

any entry level bike (ie 500$ for road) is more than decent... and a 1000$ bike will keep you happy for a LONG time. dont let anybody else tell you otherwise 🙂

Haven't thought about going custom. thought maybe in the future I should ...

And I agree about 600-1k bike will keep novice happy for a while. Some of us just get sucked in and can't stop riding. I went through my first bike in about 4 months, and have been moving up ever since. I hope to keep these for a long, long time. Just replace drive-trains and such.

that's some pretty ghetto plumbing and wiring for your water heater
Yeah, and shouldn't that bad boy be 18" off the floor? I'm calling the building inspector.

Oh yeah, nice bikes, though I'm not a big fan of Specialized MTB, I'm a much bigger fan of Fisher, Rocky Mountain, and Marin designs/geometry. Specialized road bikes are tough to beat for the price, though.

LOL I don't know ... I bought this place new in August, it passed inspections! That's my garage ... they don't insulate water heaters here like other places I've seen.

I understand your obsession with them!
I just bought my wife a Gary Fisher even though she hardly rides! I have a Raleigh that I ride all the time, but it is getting a little old now. (I bought it new in 1994 🙂 )

I used to be a hardcore biker, but I was totally ghetto.

I had a Muddy Fox MTB that I bought from a store when it got discontinued. I then slowly upgraded the parts as I could. Some of them were road parts and some MTB parts - whatever was cheap and reconditioned...

I was one of those guys who had a crappy bike but could smoke your ass... 😀

Sadly, it's the other way around with my golf game. I have a custom fit set of pings and a 30+ handicap...

What happens when one of them or all of them get stolen?

I file an insurance claim and go shopping! I have full replacement coverage from USAA.

Why would they be likely to be stolen anyway? I don't leave them unattended outdoors. I've had >$1,000 bikes for the last 15 years or so, and never had one stolen.

Yes but do you get the full amount of how much the bike and anything off of the bike that was stolen with the bike?

What is your obsession with stolen bikes?

I want to find the perfect way to keep a bike from getting stolen or someone else to. I sorta lready know though but its not possible with all bikes really 🙁

Well it is just time consuming.

Guys. imtim83 is borderline-retarded. Have you not figured that out yet? Who the fsck knows why he posts all the crap he does.

Well you can still do that but I know what you mean. I wish the same thing. I want to visit a place like that just to see how cool it is.

I'd suggest leaving the house first. You small waist should make it easy for you to slip out the nearest door or open window.

I'm ghetto with my bikes as well. I ride a bike anywhere I go and in the last 5 years I haven't spent more than $20 on any single one. Salvage what I find on my way home, and make sure it's finely tuned. Well tuned is infinitely more desirable than big coin. Also, theft isn't an issue when your ride's only worth $150/used. Old 10 speeds rock.

Wrong. I have seen those kind of bikes get stolen just as easily.

Very nice. You like the Specialized bikes and the Mavic wheelsets, huh?

How much did that stand set you back? It looks strong and stable. I have a POS 2-bike "gravity" rack, but it cost me $45 shipped, so I'm not really complaining.

If the only thing you ever worry about is someone stealing your nice things, your life would be hell.

Man..2 threads about bikes. I wanted to get a bike now that weather is warming up here in NYC for some good exercise and casual riding. I havent had a bike in over 10 years and I'm thinking that I probably wont spend more than 300 or so for one...now I'm reading here about bikes that cost upwards of 3K. Guess I have some serious saving up to do if I want something decent.
You just missed the 5 Boro Bike Tour and some ride-specific specials, e.g. $400 for a bike and pretty much a full set of accessories. (Actually, I looked up the bike, and its MSRP is $300, and the accessories retail for maybe $115, depending on the price of the helmet, so not a great deal.) May is Bike Month in NYC, so shops will probably have some specials; I dunno if they'll be the best specials that you'll see (don't assume that it's a good deal just because it's marked down).

If I were a beginner, I would spend $400 minimum on a bike, plus $100 on essential accessories (helmet, pump, gloves). If you want a "good" bike, you'll need to spend more.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaah Gooooooooooooo Specialized!!! 😀

For those asking... I think that's an Ultimate rack which is $$$

Heres a couple. If you have a local Supergo they usually have this for $50 during their sales.

If you wanna save some quid on a rack check out Ikea. They have multi-purpose racks with cycle attatchements. They're about $30.

Like BR said ... it's the Ultimate Velo Cache, listed at $169.99 ... I've had it for about a year, I think I used a 20% off coupon ... it's very sturdy, I'm happy with the purchase!
