i've never heard of this... onions deadly to dogs? 😱

YES! Their bodies can't properly break them down and fragments of the onions will get caught in their kidneys. These fragments are very sharp and will cut their kidneys from the inside constantly until their kidneys break down and stop functioning altogether. It is a VERY painful thing for a dog to go through.

Any food with traces of onions, red, yellow, green... onion powder, whatever can contain these things.

Heheh if your dog has a direct path from the stomach to the kidneys hes got bigger problems to worry about.

pwned

Onions are toxic to dogs. The toxicity is dose dependent, so the bigger the animal, the more onion need be consumed to cause a toxicity. Onion toxicity causes a Heinz body anemia. Heinz bodies are small bubble-like projections which protrude from a red blood cell and can be seen when the cells are stained. This "bubble" is a weak spot in the red blood cell and, therefore, the cell has a decreased life-span and ruptures prematurely.

If numerous red cells are affected and rupture, anemia can result. It is a form of hemolytic anemia. Onions are only one of the substances which can cause Heinz body anemia. Other substances such as Acetominophen (Tylenol) and benzocaine-containing topical preparations can also cause Heinz body anemia in the dog.

The toxic effect of the onions are the same whether the product is raw, cooked or dehydrated. The hemolytic episode usually occurs several days after onion ingestion (lowest hematocrit around day 5 post ingestion). Daily feeding of onions could have a cumulative effect due to ongoing formation of Heinz bodies versus a single exposure with a wide gap until the next exposure, allowing the bone marrow time to regenerate the prematurely destroyed red cells.

The cat is even more susceptible. Recently, Gerber began to add onion powder to all its meat baby foods. They are labeled as "better tasting". Since baby food is often used in sick cats that are not eating (to stimulate their appetites), there was concern that the onion powder would cause a Heinz body anemia in these cats. Within a week or two of the change, there were numerous reports of Heinz body anemia in cats receiving Gerber baby food in their diets.

I strongly recommend NO ONIONS for dogs. There is no benefit and certainly the potential to cause harm.

I wouldn't worry about bringing it to the vet as it as it doesn't sound like too much(it takes a lot of onion[600 to 800 grams for a 20lb dog] to kill a dog in one dose) but don't feed them people food again.

My dogs will eat almost anything too and everybody thinks it's cute except me... the one who ends up bringing them to the vet and researching how much it takes of the wrong food to kill them because of it.

Well we induced vomit by feeding them hydrogen peroxide. The big one threw up already but the small one doesn't want to live.

There's really nothing wrong with human food for dogs, as long as you understand the dietary requirements for the dogs, and as this thread points out, what foods are dangerous. Look at the ingredients on a couple of brands of dog food...

Better yet, look for homemade dogfood recipes online... They pretty much boil down to the proper mix of people foods.

Onions, garlic, chocolate, macadamia nuts... what else can kill a dog?

Edit: Apparently a search reveals grapes too, didn't know that one.

yup...here's a link to info on this human foods that poison pets
From that site:
Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet?s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.

At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhoea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal?s urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number.

The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.

Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anaemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion

While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.

My dog once ate a whole bag of Hershey's Kisses... wrappers and all. He coughed up a huge ball of foil eventually, but the chocolate didn't kill him. 😛 This was like... 2 years ago... he's 14 years old now. He pulled the bag down from a shelf in my mom's closet and got into them. Fvckin crazy dog but I love him. Sad to know that he's not gonna last much longer.

Are you thinking of ethylene glycol (antifreeze)?

Yeah, I'm thinking someone doesn't understand the digestive system. 🙂

Meh... I used to feed my old dog deep fried onions and jalapenos all the time. He LOVED them. Never did anything to him. Pears were his favorite.

Why anyone would feed their dogs people food or table scraps is beyond me. Most food we eat makes for a horrible diet for dogs and it only promotes begging.

Your dog isn't a food disposal unit.

I rarely give my dog people food, but with 5 kids, he tends to act as a nice vacuum cleaner for crumbs...

4000 years of selective breeding has turned dogs into virtual disposal units...
