My beloved Logitech MX1000 has contracted the "herky jerky"

I've read numerous reports of the MX1000 having erratic movement though I had never experienced it myself until recently. Initially (for about a year and a half), I was extremely happy with the mouse, it exhibited precision movement and no erratic behavior whatsoever. For the last few months though, it's been driving me completly nuts.

I dont recall making any changes in SetPoint or Windows Mouse Properties settings of any kind prior to this problem (hardware has not changed either). My screen res is 1920x1200 (this res amplifies the problem when trying to click on the smaller buttons).

Symptoms:

- Large fast movements are generally acceptable. Minute movements are very jerky and unpredictable. When editing text, landing the pointer between two particular letters is nearly impossible.

- When near my pointer destination and moving slowly, the pointer jumps backwards a quarter inch or so very frequently. The end result being a much farther physical mouse movement than if I had been moving the mouse at a faster speed. (I did some quick and dirty testing using my mouse pad as a guage. I noted the distance the pointer traveled while moving from the bottom to the top of the mouse pad during a quick smooth movement and then compared it to the same physical mouse movement while moving slowly. During the slow move the pointer consistantly moved about two thirds of the distance of the fast movement. (can anyone explain this?)

- When trying to follow a straight line with the pointer (vertical or horizontal) the pointer jumps either side to side or up and down respectively. The faster the movement, the more precise. Extremely slow movements result in a ridiculous amount of erratic pointer movement.

- Randomly, the pointer becomes completely sluggish. While writing the last few lines, I noticed that it took 3 passes across the mouse pad just to get the cursor halfway across the screen. Now it is only taking about 2" of movement to cross the entire screen. (why the difference?)

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Personally, I think it's time for a G5 but my budget does not allow. I need to make this thing work like it used to.......

i'm not sure...

but with my G7, I have the same symptoms as your mouse does..

I've noticed if I'm doing any wireless printing, or data transfer between my networks... I have that erratic movement.

Try unplugging your cable modem, and then moving the mouse like you did to test the "jerky" movements...

Mine went smooth -_-''

Try cleaning the lense, or what about charging the battery for a long time(2-3 days straight). Also try cleaning the USB plug(blow out for dust).

I hate to admit that when i first read your post last night, I rolled my eyes and said to myself "do you take me for an idiot? of course I've checked my lense..." but today at work I was thinking about that and could not actually recall ever cleaning my lense. When I got home I gave it the 'ol q-tip swirlie and I'll be damned....it WORKED! My mouse is rock solid again! I can even use it on the sheet of my bed (which was previously not even possible) while watching a movie.

You sir, are my freaking hero. thanks for reminding me that the solution to a PC problem need not always be complicated. I'm only sorry that I did not figure this one out by myself.

Cheers.

Lol, I remembered that if anything goes wrong with an Optical or "Laser" mouse, check the lense. I give mine a good bit of compressed air every so often because of the surface I have.

My MX-1000 did the same thing, and I also cleaned the lens and it helped. But it continued to happen sporatically. As I tried to figure out the cause, I realized that my telephone was between the mouse and the USB receiver (recharger). A bit of desk redecorating and the mouse has been trouble free ever since.

I never used to have this type of problem in a year+ of use, and can only conclude that the wireless reciever / transmitter in the mouse or the base is losing power and reducing range. I now make sure that there is always clear LOS from mouse to recharger (about 3 feet) and all is well for now.

The surface you use an optical mouse on is important too. Something that has some even regular pattern is best. Some sort of woven cloth should be excellent as it will have an even thread pattern in all directions.

Yeah, the thing that usually gets me is a very thin hair that can get stuck up in the lense socket - very hard to see without a lot of good light.

I love my MX1000 and Logitech support. When I first got the fast rf version when it came out it had bad tracking, but letting it charge completely over night fixed that. Then a year later some of the buttons started sticking. So I contacted Logitech and to get a new mouse all I had to do was give them the serials and they shipped me out a new one, so I didn't have to send in the old one. I took apart the old mouse once I got my new one and fixed it and gave it away.

I also like it a lot more then G7 and the blue tooth version of the MX1000.

Something else that may be problematic in the future is interference from other usb devices. I had a MS wireless desktop set, and whenever I had certain things plugged into the other usb ports on my computer, I would experience the problems you were having.
