Is it still safe to use a flip chip that has a chunk of the blue stuff missing? Also, anyone know exactly how deep down until the silicon is exposed?

I was putting on an ArctiCooler last night and since it doesn't fit very good on my motherboard (CUSL2), I had to use a little extra force. Bad idea. Heard a crack, looked at the processor, and it's cracked; right there on the blue piece.

The nick is on the left edge of the blue piece, about 2/3 down. Suprisingly, this thing still works. I expected it to be a paperweight, but it doesn't want to die yet.

I'm getting some Arctic Silver stuff and will fill in the nick and cover the rest of the surface. I'm going to use the stock Intel HSF since that's the only thing I have left and while it didn't give me outradegous cooling, it sure didn't bite my processor!

I suppose its ok to use it if it isn't dead. I recommend getting an alpha with the feet on if you can get one in stock somewhere. You could also get a copper shim or make some kind of a shimm with paper.

i bet you just cracked the glass topping of the chip. I believe there is a glass top of the chip for good conductivity. Since glass is not the very best conductor, although good, many have "lapped" that glass of and had better cooling results

side note - be very very careful when lapping such a tiny core. a few bad strokes and you are f..cked.

I also managed to flake a chunk off the corner of my 600E CPU slug while installing my Golden Orb.

No problem (phew). It's been running great for months now and I didn't want to lap it (and possible make matters worse).

Some have taken ALL that blue glass off for a better thermal connection.I would try and make it even, with some sand paper.

i lapped a 650E slot 1 and i will tell you now - that was a B!TCH, and i f.cked it up too. my first crack at it worked fairly well, and with a GORB i was able to run 1-2c lower than before lapping - 40-41c under full load at 966/1.85v. got bold and thought i can make this thing 100% flat, but as careful as i was i couldn't stop it from lapping unevenly with the edges of the die lower than the center, and at that point i pulled the plug before i really botched the job, giving those 1-2c back and then some. i suggest only lapping cumines when you have the right equipment and are feeling VERY PATIENT, and think twice about doing it to slot 1 cpus.

I don't really want to try lapping. I don't have the budget to support if I screw up bad.

I think I'll just try to fill it in well with some Arctic Silver.

If it still works just put your heatsink on it and don't touch it again. The corner of my 550e started to crack because I would take the Golden Orb off alot to try the chip out in other sytems. After the corner started to go bad on me I decided it was never coming off of the Iwill Adapter again. If I buy another chip I will just buy another adapter to use on my slot 1 board and keep the 550e on the Iwill it is on with the Gorb if at all possible.

While replacing my stock Intel boxed HSF with a GOrb just this morning I noticed that two of the corners on my 700E's core are worn down just a bit. No doubt this was caused by my previous clumsy HSF installations (including one unit with a bent clip that wasn't really my fault. Honest.)

Anyhow, it seems to work just fine (running 933MHz at standard voltage, in fact). And after reading about some similar experiences I'm reassured that it'll be OK.

I saw a pic someplace of a Celeron that had almost all of the edges and corners chipped away from being installed and removed numerous times, supposedly the chip still worked. My own chip got the lower left corner knocked off of it the day I bought it from a gorb installation, but it's fine.
