Opinions, rants, and PLEASE warn of spoilers.
I just got out of the screening for Batman Begins and here are my thoughts. I will give no spoilers to the plot.
Story: (I dont want to give away too much here)
The movie really stays true to the origins of Batman. No cheesy lines, no joking around. This is the way Batman was meant to have been portrayed. For those of you looking for a Bruckheimer action film will be disappointed. This is a BEGINS film, they really get to flesh out both Batman as well as Bruce Wayne. This is great for the casual movie fan as well as the comic book guy/gal.
Cast:
Christian Bale is my new favorite Batman. I know most of us are Keaton fans and the last 2 movies kind of destroyed any hope of Kilmer/Clooney doing well, but Nolan really brings out the best in Bale. I took him seriously as this guy who has some real emotional problems. One thing a lot of us noticed is how Bale changes his voice while in costume; I thought that was kinda neat while some others didnt like it.
Liam Neeson (Qui Gon!), Ken Watanabe, and Cillian Murphy all round out the cast pretty well. None of their lines are forced and scenes actually seem to flow pretty decently with them. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are nice additions as they throw in a witty comment here and there and seem pretty natural. Gary Oldman as Gordon is good too because you know he'll be in future films. Katie Holmes is eh, not a very necessary character but she's not terrible either. I could care less about her.
Setting:
Everything looks pretty convincing in terms of Gotham City. It's back to the dark setting we all love and miss from the first two movies and comic books. The Batman story is never really too clear which time period the story takes place but it's safe to say it's in the present day. You get to see a place or two around the world (as you've seen in the trailer) but not for too long. Nolan has used some really cool shots in this movie. Again, I dont want to give away too much, but I think Nolan was the perfect choice for this.
Batmobile:
Before there's another Batmobile comment, please know that it's derived from a Frank Miller Graphic novel written back in 1988, The Dark Knight Strikes. This bad boy gets a nice amount of screen time and it can definitely move!
Video Game:
Got to play the first 2 levels of the video game. Graphically, it's pretty nice but the game seems a little plain so far. There are some neat elements of using "fear" to your advantage, but the game is ultimately cool because it IS Batman. The best way I can describe it is a mix of Ninja Gaiden and Splinter Cell. You can use stealth or brute force with some gadgets here and there. I'll probably play it through, maybe there's more in store later in the game.
