I wonder if just the process of excavating stirs them up and hatches a bunch of extra eggs or something. My neighbors said that in over 10 years they never had an issue with termites until we started digging. Pest control guy said that they were probably dormant and the equipment moving next door woke them up.

Also, remembered reading an article about millipedes in the local newspaper, just dug it up:

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/ask/article_e3cafc2a-b3f3-11e0-aa6d-001cc4c03286.html

Good info...thanks for the link. Nice to know they have an expiration date on their invasions. What a crappy way to go though...it's dry outside so you crawl your way inside a house to escape the heat. Then basically dry up and die trying to crawl along the basement floor.

If only those stupid japanese beatles were as unfortunate. Those things have wrecked hell on my landscaping.

Just put one of those japanese beatle catches in your neighbors yard = problem solved. They will now and forever migrate to their yard. We tried our yard and failed over and over. As soon as we took ours down (and the neighbor still had theirs up) the problem went away

I know you are joking but I actually know people that had to move out of a house in Phoenix after they were beseiged by scorpions. With scorpions if they get into a house and declare it their own, nothing short of a full on nuking from orbit will get them out. I've heard the same thing about brown recluses around the southern part of the US. At least my pest doesn't come with a side effect of skin necrosis and a chance of death.

Funny that you mention that. I was just about to say "I know what that must be like - my home is besieged by those fuzzy hunter/jumper spiders." I used to have TONS of them. You would have to check chairs on our porch all over before sitting in them, often having to kill 2 or 3 of the things. But, as I slowed down to think about it, I don't think I've seen one all summer. We had a couple dozen "mutant" chickens hatch (cross-bred chickens that I allow to just free range. I don't feed them, except whatever cat food they steal.) Those chickens are all over the place - I'll bet their keeping my hard completely crawling insect free.

I have to go back to the post office today -- want me to send you some chickens to keep in your basement? Free chicken eggs every morning too! :p

If you hardly go into the basement, the best product I can recommend are Hot Shot No Pest Strips. They contain dichlorvos which is a pretty powerful insecticide, but the amount in these strips is so minute, it needs to build up for about 4 hours in an enclosed area before it becomes lethal to insects.

The warning label says not to use them in areas occupied by humans more than 4 hours a day. Definitely give them a try. They sell them at Lowes/Home Depot, so you can return them if they are ineffective (if that matters to you).

I wonder if some of that spray foam would help as well or if they'd enjoy chewing thru it.
