My Barton 2500+ (oc'ed) vs Athlon 64 3000+

Just wondering how much of a difference will I see if I upgraded to the 64 3000+ chip... I overclock my 2500+ to about 2.22 Ghz (3200+).

I bet I will see a difference in gaming, but how about regular everyday things like web surfing and office productivity?

you wont be able to tell much in web surfing and office stuff. a barton at 2.5ghz is about as fast as the athlon 64 3000+. a barton at 2.2ghz is just a bit slower then the athlon 64 2800+.

So would the only REAL advantage to upgrading to a 64 chip is the ability to run 64-bit apps?

I had my 2700+ XP clocked to 2.31ghz for a long time, at far cry lets say I would get 35FPS at a certain part, after upgrading to a AMD64 3200+ I got about 55FPS at that part with my x800 pro. It was MUCH faster. Hope this helps any, could be mainly because the video card was being cpu limited, but I do think that the A64's are faster then the XP's or bartons clocked to the same speed.

CPU speed is important, but it isnt' everything, ESPECIALLY with gaming, where FSB (bandwith) comes into play.

A 2.0 GHz system with a 200FSB will be faster (benchmarkable) and feel faster than a 2.0GHz system with a 166FSB.

I have a Barton 2500 overclocked to 2.20GHz (11 x 200) and it just screams. Very happy with it. Bandwith is everything.

Yeah, my 2500+ is smooth, just wondering if I will really see a noticable gain....

You'll see very little improvement in gaming without a videocard that requires all that bandwidth to put forth its greatest performance. Only with a few current high-end cards would the Barton be a bad bottleneck. That and NX support is about all you gain--regular everyday things will see no difference in performance.
