I like to keep things simple on the workstation side and go with a single SSD, and store all data on the server, which has raid 5 with 7 drives. That way everything is centralized and centrally backed up. Image the workstation once everything is installed, and you're good to go.

Just to be clear on what I think short stroking is:
Take a 600GB drive and short stroking it to a 300GB drive

vs creating (2) 300GB partitions - use the 1st 300GB the same as above
but still have the extra 300GB available for whatever

Is the short stroked drive that much faster than the 1st 300GB partition?

It would be the same, until Windows decides it wants to peek at the second partition while you are accessing the first partition.

TRIM does not work with RAID, it's that simple.

There's been some chatter that the latest version (maybe beta) of Intel RST drivers support Trim through onboard Intel RAID.

Over time this will degrade the drive's performance even with garbage collection.

What? Where'd that statictic come from? Whatever performace hit is negligible. Depends on the quality of GC.

After over a year, I've not had ANY performace hit related to not having TRIM.

Until it's official I wouldn't mention that to people simply because they'll buy drives expecting it. And we don't even know what chip sets it will be support on.

On top of that a lot of mobos use cheaper jMicron raid chips in the board.

Sure just by a server to backup your data. Where the hell do you guys get your money?
