I like the carefree look too, but at the same time Derpy's eyes are an important identifier.
I've taken your vote into account though, so I'll leave it as.
 
As the others mentioned, I resized mine to get it under 7kb and it worked ok. Definitely wish they could be a bit larger of a file size but maybe that's something for down the road.
 
Drew a new one because the photo of a chimp I wanted looked like shit at 24 kB. That didn't even upload so I went with a 6 kB stick figure.
 
Made it, I think? It won't matter in about 24 hours because I'll be blind as a fucking bat from looking into the sun in the form of this theme that I cannot customize. Very convenient.
