Theres no reason not to buy a new car these days. Low interest rates, great deals on 03's. You also get the great new car smell, and some people prefer to have a car new, so they can drive it to death themselves.

i guess Thegonagle is right about the priorities. i'd be more than willing to take a used car that gives worse gas mileage but KILLS the corolla off the line

Corollas aren't meant to be driven "off the line" you tit. Your aunt bought a well-built, highly reliable car because, unlike you, she doesn't need several tonnes of flashy metal to bolster her deepest inferiorities.

Wow, my 91 Cutlass has 160...

I have 1998 Corolla CE; 2414lb curb weight with 120 (stock) hp..I might have a couple more now..my car isn't "fast" (16.469 1/4 mile), but it's close to 40mpg highway (38.5..)..and with over 130,000 miles on it and running great, I'm not complaining.

There's a good chance a stick 04 corolla is faster than what you drive. I've seen abusively driven late model, stick, near stock corollas run high 15s in the quarter mile.

The 03+ corollas got celica GT motors down to the same exact intake manifold. Stock for stock, it dynos as much WHP as a celica GT. That pretty much means it's underrated by about 10 hp, making the actual number 140 hp. Of course, marketing won't let toyota say the corolla has as much hp as the more expensive celica, so they just lie about it. :D
