Gusters:
1. write awesome music
2. good lyrics (no "my baby" crap)
3. great instrumentalists.
4. they can sing very well and actually sing in-tune; even during LIVE performances

If you guys haven't heard of them check them out! Check out their songs "closer", "rocketship" and more.

I just checked out Guster - Two Points for Honesty

I'm about :45 seconds into it and so far I'm unimpressed.

Simply not my style of vocals, but the instruments are well done.

(some lyrics so far)

"If that's all you will be, you'll be a waste of time"
"Two words for honesty, it must make you sad to know that nobody cares at all"

The drums are very cool in the song and the balance of guitars and keyboards is nice.

I don't know what's so good about these lyrics, let me try your recommendations.

My personal choice for most underrated band is Dream Theater.

I agree with Pennstate, they had more than 15 minutes of fame.

Unfortunately their time has passed.

dvinemartyr: They are not the best at every catagory that I listed. But, they're very good overall. Benfolds has good lyrics, but they have not had a good song in a while.

I prefer Guster- Fa Fa :)

Also try:
Corey Stevens - Road to Zen (softer rock but excellent)
Corey Stevens - Charles Bronson Vibe (a bit harder rock)

I hadn't listened to Dream Theater in a few years and I wanted to take another listen so I downloaded A Change Of Seasons: l. The Crimson Sunrise/ll. Innocence/III. Carpe Diem/IV. The Darkest Of... from their Change of Seasons disc and I firmly believe they're one of the most musical groups EVER and it's unfortunate more people don't know about them. If you haven't heard them, please take a listen. I think I'm going to buy this CD, this is truly phenomenal. Not many bands can record 20+ minute epics like they can.

Excellent lyrics (truly excellent, not many people can write like this and put it into music), beautiful guitars (both electric and acoustic in a nice mixture) and while the lead singer's voice isn't the best ever, he's definitely strong. Reminds me of Queen but on a higher level.

<< nonpoint, check them out >>

I just recently took a listen to them, excellent but not too different from some of the other new offerings out there. I am very impressed with Fear Factory's new upcoming work however.

well, they're not exactly undiscovered, but for under-rated, i'd have to say Counting Crows... you can hear their influence in a lot of songs today. Especially considering they came along during the height of the 'grunge' days....

Heard of a swedish rock band called Hellacopters? Moving, dynamic rock, good lyrics and good singing. Really beats the bestsellers like Foo Fighters or Offspring.
Well, at least that's the only one I ever liked in the genre. (Usually listening to jazz, blues, classical, Led Zeppelin, Helloween, Queen, that kind of stuff...)

Also worth checking out:
Spin Doctors (especially if you play drums)
Guitar Slingers
Children of Bodom, great metal guitar practise, otherwise: crap.

Ah yes, Guster is great.

What about The Tea Party? People know about them but I don't think they're overly popular. I love all of their music.

There's a new band out that I really like. They're called Alien Ant Farm. Check out these songs; Movies, Calico, Attitude, Stranded, Rubber Mallet.
Yea, they're very alternative sounding but they aren't super popular yet and I really enjoy their sound.

A second vote for Guster! I absolutely love these guys. Btw "Two points for honesty" is not one of their better songs(though I do like it). Their first cd, Parachute, is my favorite. :)
