I used to get it all the time when I was a kid. Our cats would get the oil on their fur then come inside and cuddle with us. One time my brother?s face swelled up like a watermelon and his eyes swelled shut.

That time we both got cortisone because we were in really bad shape.

It's named Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub. Seriously, if you have poison anything get the stuff, it works great. Available online and in any decent pharmacy.

Just use rubbing alchohol. It works just as well and is way cheaper.

I tried rubbing alcohol one time, and it didn't work as well as Tecnu.

Why wouldn't it work as well? All you have to do is wash the oils off from the plant. Rubbing alcohol will remove them just fine.

I don't know. Maybe it evaporated too quickly, or the viscosity wasn't conducive to lifting the oils...? I was itchy, and less concerned with the science and more with the efficacy! 🙁

I've scrubbed with tecnu 5 times in the last few days. While I'm at work I put prep h on it and bandage it. When I get home I shower and scrub again, and put calamine lotion on it and air dry. Washed my sheets last night and slept with long sleeve shirt on.

I may try an oatmeal and bleach bath tonight...

Tecnu won't do shit once you have a rash. It's good stuff, I carry it around in the woods and wash with it if I hit poison oak, but it's only good for washing off the oils immediately after contact. Won't do you any good now.

I feel your pain. Me and my GF at the time thought it would be romantic to have sex/foreplay underneath a tree in the middle of nowhere under the moonlight. That was the worst 3 months of my life afterwards as there wasn't so much as a square inch of my body that didn't have a severe rash and blisters. Also agree on going to the doctor to get a shot and some medicine.

ive never had any poison ivy/oak rashes and i played in the woods all the time as a kid. i must have just been lucky.

i did get mites all over my...self though as a kid, christ that was horrible having to pluck every one out.

Many kids are nearly immune to poison ivy rash, or only get it lightly. Often, than "immunity" changes as they get older, like it did with me.

Another vote for Tecnu. Never gotten poison anything (which is pretty incredible given the amount of time I've spent in the woods over the course of my life, maybe I don't react?), but I've heard good things.

In any case, I feel obligated to share a humorous story here: Back in high school I was just going through a regular day when my locker-neighbor showed up with a bad case of poison ivy. I asked him what happened, and apparently the JV football team (which he was on) had pissed off the coach at practice. So the coach had them run to a fence with instructions to "bring back a leaf". Guess what was growing on that fence. 😀 Suffice to say it wiped out most of the JV football team for a few days. :laugh:

There's getting poison ive/oak with some contact and then there's rolling around in it, rubbing it into your skin naked for an hour. BIG difference.

I used to play paintball in the woods a lot when I was younger. There were times were my face and arms were swolled the fuck up due to poison ivy. so I did my research and know how the shit looks like, so i stay clear away from it. Anyways, Im at my mothers house and shes got a cashew tree in her backyard, that never gave fruit. until now. I love cashews so she let me pick them and prep them. You have to roast the SEED to get all the "toxic" oils out. Well I ate quite a bit and later on that night, I looked in the mirror and thought I say jay z. my lips were HUGE. turns out this fucking cashew oil contains the same ingredient poison ivy,sumac and oak have that gives such a reaction to the skin. The oil got all over my face (wiping sweat of forehead) all over my forearms and somehow behind my knee. luckily we have a doctor in the family and had to take 2 steroid shots in teh butt. shit worked wonders because I was MUCH better the next day.

notes - if your allergic to poison ivy, DO NOT fucking with cashews straight from the tree.

I heard about a man (my childhood friend's dad) who was hospitalized and nearly died because he burned acres of poison ivy/oak and it got all in his eyes and respiratory system. I myself was using a small axe to chop the base of some old-growth poison oak going up 100ft+ trees and got it all over my body without ever touching it. The shit must go airborne easily. My dad has HORRIBLE reactions to all of those nasty poison plants. To clear it up he has to get prescription cream and steroids... every time. Thank God that I don't react anything like him... otherwise I would have been in a world of discomfort many a times by now. 😛

That's what I ended up doing after I ended up messing about in it most of the day......it was horrible! Thank God it was 'only' on my arms tho.....Got some expensive-ish scrub stuff in a little bottle at the drug store. OMG it felt so good using it! My arms were all red/swollen and weepy for over a week. You have my sympathies Sagalore.

And, yeah, I used to be out in the woods all day when I was younger w/no problems whatsoever. The 'immunity decreasing over time' monster definitely got me!
