Yeah, I'm a few blocks away from campus. I don't really mind telling people where I am since, well, all my good stuff is gone now...

I do hope you call all the credit reporting bureaus and put a watch on your credit.

Social security card + license = Identity theft.

Sorry to hear about it.

They aren't gonna do anything special since someone stole my social security card and driver's license. It's up to me to make sure they don't mess with my credit. I doubt the reporting bureaus will do anything out of their way to protect me. What sucks is that I can't even get a new social security number unless I can prove that my identity has been stolen, meaning I can't do anything to prevent my identity from being stolen. I can only act on it once it has been stolen. sucks...

Yes they will. They put a watch on your credit and lock down any new offers until they get approval from you by phone. Also, it's a hell of a lot easier to clean up any credit problems in the future when they know you've had your stuff stolen.

Call them, now!

EDIT - I'll even get you started

Thanks bunker, but that's already been done. Turns out all I had to do was call Equifax, and they forwarded the fraud request to the other reporting agencies. Thanks though!

Yeah, Berkeley has some pretty sleazy areas. Are you on north-side or south side? I lived on the south side (college ave and parker) for about 3 years and my girlfriend actually still lives there. Maybe I should let her know to be sure she uses her deadbolt.

Did they break in during the day?

Most break-ins happen during the day, by a person or persons that have cased the area for a few weeks already. They know when you are and aren't home. They want to be in and out in the quickest, conflict-free manner possible. Scumbags that they are. :|

Cool, that's like 3 blocks away from me. I'm on Parker and Regent. This happened sometime between 1pm and 4pm in the afternoon.

I did notify my landlord about the deadbolt problem, but not in writing. And if it's not in writing, it never happened. That was my bad there. Actually, I should probably go out now and get a new deadbolt, and just deduct it from the rent.

Well, this guy either took his time, or knew what stuff I had. I mean, he even remembered to get the charger for my digicam.

Er, was the camera attached to the charger at the time? Was it out in the open? If not, the burglar has been in your apartment before.

Nope, camera was hooked to my computer cuz I was getting the pictures off it. The charger was all the way across my living room (not that my living is all that big), partially underneath my papusan chair from Pier1. Man, the more I think about it, the more I think it had to be someone who's been in my apt before. But there haven't been more than 8 people in my apt. Well, I guess that narrows the list down.

Bunker beat me to it. You should have DONE THIS ALREADY>>>>like right after you got off the phone w/the cops!

Or you can steal YOUR OWN identity. Apply for credit cards, use them, and pretend that it was an identity theif. Is it fraud, sure it is....but thats a great way to recvoer all your lost merchandise, plus get a new social security number. Work the system, its the American way.

Haha, that's a sweet idea.

*knocks on wood desk* I've never had MY apt broken into, but know plenty of people that have. I am VERY picky about who I let into my apt b/c I do have nice stuff. People don't think...you have a party, your buddy brings over a buddy, who brings a buddy...two people you've never met before...people suck, dude.

While they are smiling and drinking your booze, they're taking mental notes of your stereo (hmm, SONY receiver...nice....DVD....CDs.....)

Through casual conversation (remember, everyone's drinking and having a nice time) you say "yeah, the 9 to 5 really sucks ass, I leave at six and don't get home until after seven...I need a new job!!) They are taking mental notes.

That may or may not be what happened. I wish you luck; you won't get anything back (you know this already...) but now you've learned possibly what NOT to do in the future. Best of luck to you.

oh snap. thats like near bing wong's laundry isnt it. my friend lives near there. ill let her know.

i live on northside ... we got broken into last year. he/she popped one of the windows open and took a boombox, a bunch of cds, and like six bottles of smirnoff ice. it was like @ 330 in the morning when there were people still awake upstairs and me and my roommate sleeping across the hall from the room that was broken into. burglar had some balls.

we also had some weird guy staring into our windows at some of the girls in our house. that was also at night. there are some real freaks in berkeley, i say.

im sick of these theives. they did it to my dad before too. got away with 10+ credit cards. the worst thing is going to the police station, and have them not care about you. tell you its not police matters, and then forward your case to another agency where its forgotten. call your creditor etc., they are much better at handling these things.

thats definately something i can vouch for. these identity thefts are real scums. some of them literally spied on my family, until they knew our routine, when we were home, and not. they ordered some emergency cash withdrawal credit cards. planned when it was going to arrive at my home with UPS when nobody was home. they drove up to the driveway when they saw a UPS truck go by, pretended like they lived here, and signed for the package. if i ever see someone stealing my mail, i swear!!
:moon:

i wish you the best of luck and i truly hope you CATCH THE B@ASTATDRRD!!!!! coincidentally, i also live in norcal. San jose.
