My adventures in 360 issues.

I've had a 360 for quite some time now, and about 3 months ago I got the RRoD. Called MS, went through the hoops and sent it off to be repaired. I got it back, with the normal apology letter, 1 month Gold Live card etc plugged it in and RRoD still.

Called MS (again), went through the hoops (again)and sent it off to be repaired(again). I got it back(again), with the normal apology letter(again), 1 month Gold Live card etc plugged it in and RRoD still (AGAIN!!!).

Called MS, they said this time they will just replace the unit, apologized for the issues and that I should send it in and they will return a new 360 (refurb of course). Sent it off to be replaced. I got a box back and it was my original 360 (without the faceplate for some reason) with a letter saying that they would not replace/repair the unit due to the warranty being voided for XYZ reason (ok... I will admit there that I did modify the unit way long ago).

I take the lump and leave it be.

The other day I see in the ATFS forums that a guy has bare consoles for sales (RRoD repairs). Guaranteed to work as they ahve been tested. Well this is perfect for me, all I need is the bare console as I have my PSU, HDD, controllers etc.

I buy one and get it delivered yesterday. Plug it in... and RRoD. I trust the seller (131 Heatware) But I just can not believe that my luck would be THIS horrible. So I start to think... the only common denominator is the PSU in the equation.

Could it be the PSU that is causing the RRoD? Is my original unit actually FIXED and my new unit from AT actually fine but the RRoD is showing up due to the PSU? I know I'm grasping at straws, but it just seems amazing to me that MS fixed it 2 times (I assume they check for green lights before shipping back) and that my new one magically doesnt work now either.

I want to go buy a new PSU from gamestop but $100 to "test"? Anyone know their return policy on an open item if its NOT what I need? If it does work I'll happily keep the PSU obviously.

ANY input would be greatly appreciated. I'm just at a loss as to whats up with the RRoD curse I have and now I have this open issue with the AT seller. He's offered to send me another one but I dont want to waste his or my time if its MY PSU.

Thanks in advance.

i dunno i sent in my 3rd rrod about 1 month ago. they gave me the "bigger" box and i sent in my power supply with it as well.

2 weeks later i get it back. they gave me a new PSU which was actually different as it didn't "snap" into the back of the 360 at all. the 360 was the same one i sent in so i geuss they "fixed" it.

however when i turn it on for the first time, there is no video/sound on screen. it's not RRoD'ing or anything, just no sound/video. i had another PSU and i tried both of them and same problem happening both times.

so yea i had to go through all that hoopla crap again and it had a delivery attempt yesterday but no one was there to sign. i dont think anyone will be there today either but if not i may just go pick it up tomorrow from fedex.

On the 2nd call to MS, they did go through the PSU "checking", and I SWEAR that the rep said "we'll send you a bigger box this time... please include your PSU", though the accent was a bit hard to understand I will admit. Regardless I got the normal white box for just the console again so that is all I sent in the 2nd time too.

Well thats the question... I mean whats a "real RRoD"

Its three quadrants lit up red
(NW,SW,SE)

Some people see it flashing red, and just presume they're getting the RRoD. Not saying that's the case here, but it seems weird you'd get so many in a row.

yeah its that. I thought you meant that "is it really the heat issue or something else..." causing it.

Its definitely the RRoD as you have described above. Is it ONLY the warped MB that causes it? Or can it be PSU too? I mean I just can not believe I've been screwed this many times over.

I have a guy at working brining in his PSU tomorrow and I will bring in my "new" console and give it a whirl. Hopefully he has the old style PSU with the metal clips

Could be PSU, the video cables, other HW. Not all RR are the "RROD".

See thats my question... can the visual RRoD not be THE RRoD caused by the heat issue. Video cables? What if I dont even hook up video cables? I should get greens with just PSU and console right?

The three red rings indicate a general hardware failure, so it isn't necessarily warping of the PCB, that's just one thing that could cause it.

he has the 3 quadrants of the typical RRoD. he has the real RRoD.

the video cables have nothing to do with it.

i dont see why this is so hard for ATCG to understand in this thread

Try the other PSU you mentioned, no vid cables or HD, turn it on, you should get 4 quadrants. (no video cable) Plug in vid cable and HD and see if you get 3 quadrants or 4. If its 3 its RROD.

Quick question, do the refurb units have the original manufacture dates or new "repair" dates on their serial. I got a "replacement" a few months ago but the "MFR date" on it was 12-29-07, didn't know if it was brand new or just a restamped fixed unit (it's not given me a lick of trouble yet though, and it's much quieter than my old 360).

I never got a refurb. They sent me my old one back.

If anyone (still) cares, all signs point to PSU. Guy at work brought his PSU in today and I brought in the used 360 I just bought from AT and low and behold, when I plugged it in without the video cables, I got 4 red lights. Snapped in the video cables and blammo. She started up.

If ALL ALONG the only thing wrong with my original 360 was the PSU, I'm going to kill MS.

It very well could be the PSU. I went through quite a few 360's (6 to be exact) before they decided to replace my PSU. They would all work for a while(Well two of them were dead on arrival), and then RROD. Since they did that it's been running fine, so I assume that was the problem. Can't say for sure, but that's what it seems like.

With my first case of the RRoD, I suspected the PSU. I did what the OP considered, bought a 2nd PSU and was able to rule that out. The PSU isn't the magic solution we're looking for. Fortunately, that was the solution for the OP's case though.

yah and as you noticed, he knew it was not an RRoD when it was 4.

Plugged new PSU into my old 360 that was "fixed" twice then refused to be replaced by MS due to voided warranty and it worked flawlessly.
I wonder what MS will say if I call and complain. At the very least I would like to get my faceplate back from them so I could use the machine.
