My floppy is doing the exact same thing in WinME and my cable is installed correctly and the drive is new. I have even tried other drives and same thing. I know the drives work because I have tried them in other systems. My machine usually returns a "disk in drive A is not formatted" and I know the disk has data on it. Sometimes when I reboot the floppy will work for a short time and then go crazy.

without even opening the case, it the floppy activity light comes on when you power on and stays on, that often means the cable is flipped

otherwise cable is loose, or the drive croaked

Can you boot to floppy? If so, the problem is Windows, and I don't know what to do.

If the drive light goes on and off but the drive still can't read disks, it's a sign that the drive could be plugged into the wrong connector on the cable - it has to go to the connector immediately the first twist in the cable.

Sounds like the floppy drive is not properly identified in the bios.

Boot into the bios and see if the floppy drive is ID'ed as 3.5" @1.44
