My 9800XT is ordered!

Yep, now Im definently glad I waited that looooooong extra week. From what i've been seeing, I personally feel justified in spending $500 for a video card to round off my new P4 setup. Those of you may greatly disagree or have many reasons why this 9800xt is a joke, a ripoff or simply have more patience or reason to wait for the R420 instead, is fine. Others may concluded that the price doesn't justify the slight increase in performance and prefer the greater bang to buck ratio of flashing 9800NP's to Pro's or simply pushing your 9800 to its limits. I have my reasons as well: As many wise man once said, "To each his own"

1. My GF4 4200 nearing the end of its useful life. For me, *PERSONALLY* I am no longer happy with the performance it gives me in my games. I find the annoying slowdown in parts of UT2k3 even with no AA or AF extremely annoying. Ive always found Battlefield 1942 seemingly has an "issue" with Nvidia cards. From people iv'e spoken with, it runs like an absolute dream with ATI cards, with narey slowdown orwarping textures.

I am also preparing for the impending Half Life 2 launch, and I want the absolute best for best. Bar none.

2. I have the money. I work my ass off 40+ hours a week at my new tech job. The job may not pay as much as i'd like, but its still more then enough to pay my current bills and put money in the bank. In short, $500 is a big chunk of change, but it won't break my bank. Plus, living with your folks until the rent prices goes down helps too Oh, and no girlfriend helps too.

3. I am impatient. No wonder here, you've seen me on this board the last month. No further explanation needed.

4. There ALWAYS something new around the corner, period. I can wait all I want for the newest and greatest, but during that time, I linger and suffer with older hardware that doesn't allow me to fully enjoy the hobby that I love doing. This is something all of us have to make PERSONAL decisions on. The balance of money, need, want and time in this hobby is strenuous, but its one we accept as computer gamers.

5. It was time to give ATI a chance, plus the simple fact that NVIDIA isn't up to snuff anymore.

6. Cause life is short and you needn't have reasons to delay things that bring happiness to your life. Granted, I do other things then play games, but gaming is a major one. Like my father always said "If it brings you happiness, and you can afford it, do it" This coming from the man who has a nearly a quarter of a million dollars in sword collecting

8. My job is on shake ground due to economy. I do not know what will happen in the coming months. I may have a nice raise real soon and be able to get the R420 next year. I may be outa of a job or working a dead end one and wishing I had gotten the best while I had the money. I may move out and be forced to cut my "fun" money drastically and not being able to upgrade for some time and wishing I had gotten the best.

7. I cause I wanted it

Next week is going to rock, thats all I can say

I can think of a lot better things to spend $500 on.

Titties and beer, for one.

A whole new rig, for two.

You paid $499? I know that's retail but I thought I read that the XT was going to be available online for $399? I've done a bunch of reading today so I don't have any idea where I read that though. Did a quick scan but can't find it.

Um ....No offense mate, but it is not due out for a month as I understand it .... enjoy the wait.

($399 was mentioned at Rade3d; other reviews list it at $499)

Link -- From Rage3D...

The Radeon 9800 XT and Radeon 9600 XT represent eXTreme enhancements and optimizations in manufacturing process technology and eXTra clock speeds with the release of OverDrive on the desktop side.

Both the Radeon 9800 XT and Radeon 9600 XT will be shipping in October at MSRP $399 and $199 respectively. Both XT boards will be bundled with the most anticipated coupon of the year that allows you to obtain a copy of Valve's highly anticipated Half Life 2. With the release of Half Life 2 you will see much more of your cards potential used than any other game on the market.

The Radeon 9600 XT certainly packs a lot of value for the price, considering that the game itself alone costs between $40-$50 and the prices of the board are usually lower than MSRP. The Radeon 9800 XT offers the fastest performance with the usual premium price. The Radeon 9800 XT is not an upgrade for current 9700 users but for those with older cards it will be a great purchase. I would fully recommend the Radeon 9600 XT looking for a mainstream card.

ATI's DX9 cards represent the de facto standard in DX9 quality and performance. With the new XT line ATI continues to provide the gaming community with the fastest gaming performance.

I was actually asking the same thing even before it came out... but i'ts $499... i don't see how a 256MB card would be $299 when the 9800Pro 256MB is still at $450. AFAIK... there is no 128MB version of the 9800XT...

well, if the 9800XT proves to be a whole lot faster I can get it for free...

I got my 9800Pro at compusa with the service plan that will allow me to return my "defective" card for a new one and if the model I have is discontinued I can get the equivelant in price and features instead. Basically I take my 9800Pro in and say it doesn't work...then I say but they don't make this one anymore. Then I go grab the 9800XT or whatever is there at the time in the same price range. I walk out and get a new service plan for the new card and do it again :)

TOugh call to make. If you want the best right now that card is it. Problem is we are ~ 3months off R420 and NV40.

Man so close........................

Enjoy the card, it will be a good one.

Roger Phantron, I hear ya. It's your money and it will be worth it to you.

You are making a MAJOR upgrade from the 4200. You will not be disappointed. I went from a GF2 Ultra to a 9800np. At first I wasn't crazy about the card, but then, played with it just to see how well it played at high resolutions with high IQ settings....long story short, I love this card, and have no regrets.

Hell, I hardly play anything but Quake, and many would tell you that the Ultra card handles that game well. Let me tell you that it does not handle it as well as my new card, and the same will go for you. You are obviously passionate about it; so am I. Aside from the occassional free-time-to-spare novel reading (rather than school text), gaming is my only hobby. Get it while you can and enjoy.

Prepare for HL2. It's coming. Then, perhaps, Call to Duty (looking good from the screenies), then, Doom 3, and one more that I personally have waited on for nearly 2 years is Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, though I have no idea when it will release.

If it has 256MB of memory and it comes with (a coupon for) Halo 2, then the price isn't that bad. It's way out of my price range, but hey to each his own (as even he said).

Personally I think $500 on an XT is a better purchase than $300+ on a FX5900 ;).

Too bad they're not phasing out the 9800 Pro and the XT won't really affect the 9800's price, eh?

Awesome card smart buy. I would have waited till next generation to buy it, or at least with a HL2 combo package deal but I'm on a budget from the gestapo:)

power to you man. if you got the money spend it. it will be the fastest card up into next march probably, and will easily carry you through DX9 games into at least the end of next year. it will probably also be a great card for your next system.

nice to be able to buy nice things....

Hey, I may have to eat my words. Appparantly Dell is shipping 9800XT cards right now with one of their high-end systems. I thoughts I had read elsewhere that it would be a month until it was available.
