My 9700 Pro died tonight. Suggest a replacement.

Hey all, as the topic says I lost my dear old 9700 Pro (R.I.P.) and need a suitable replacement. I'm looking for something that is equally as good, and preferably better. Since the 9700 pro was top of the line in late 02, I'm guessing the budget cards of last gen should be enough to be better than the 9700. Right? Wrong? I just need something that will play TF2 as well as I was accustomed to (ugly) that won't break the bank.

TIA

AGP 7600GT's are now well under $150, and are ~50% faster than 7600GS's, and both are 3-5x as fast as your 9700 Pro. I'd suggest a 7600GT, since it doesn't cost much more than the GS, these days.

edit: I meant to say that the 7600GT is up to ~50% faster than the 7600GS. It depends on the resolution and amount of AA being used.

don't waste the money on upgrading an agp rig. either snag a used agp card on the cheap or build a new rig with pci-e. pci-e cards are much cheaper, so with the money you get from selling your old mobo you shouldn't be out too much more than you would have been for spending $150 for the 7600gt.

I'm not intended to waste money upgrading an AGP machine, I know its a dead end. I'm just looking to get my desktop back to where it was 24 hours ago. If I had the money/need I would build a brand new machine and it would definitely be PCI-E, but that's not in the cards so I'm just looking to get my desktop functional again.

I think though the 7600gt might be too much vid card, since I still have a 2.4 P4 800 FSB. I'm pretty sure I will be CPU limited with which ever card I choose. So if a 7600gs will get me past my 9700 then I don't need more as it will never be used as the CPU won't let it get any higher/better. I will also not be using this card on a new machine in the future, this card will stay with this machine when it is retired from desktop duty and enters server duty.

Thanks guys 🙂

Spend as little money as possible, saving what you can for a more thorough upgrade in the feature. A 7600GS would be a decent card. Perhaps there may be some deals in Hot Deals or the FS/T forum on some used hardware as well.

I ran into a similar problem (my 9800 Pro died in the spring) and I went with a 7600GS. My experience with it has been positive.

Alright guys just made the purchase. I went with the 7600gs, with a MIR. Hopefully will get to me on Friday as I have Friday off and plan on playing games all day 😀

RIP to your 9700 Pro. I still have mine running strong, that card kicks so much ass. I used it for about 3.5 years and then gave it to my brother.

I did the same exact thing when I built Shadowhawk in June.

My 9700 pro is running strong in my secondary PC ... the 6800 that I had bought to replace it died ....
That said .. my X1800XT in my main rig is performing great 🙂

I don't know what budget you are looking at, but I am going to suggest an AGP 7900GS or X1950Pro (these are around the $150 price point.)
They are HUGE improvements over the 9700, and they will likely last you for several years.

Mine's still running strong, too. Had it since about Dec. 2002. My system was one of the top 1-2% of all reported in 3D Mark back then.

Just downloaded 3DMark 06 and ran it this past weekend....complete slide show. Scored 600+. Upgraded video driver and got a bit over 800.

I'm in the bottom 5 percent of rigs tested now. A lot changes in 5 years.

New computer time is just around the corner.

I still have a 9800 pro in my mom's rig. I really need to sell that thing while it's still worth something...She'll be fine with a gforce2 gts, right? right?

How about a 7800GS. Is 120 After Rebate or the X1950PRO I think that is as far as you can go in terms of AGP. See which one is cheaper, I know both are running sales.
