try the components back in the old mb?

the mobo manual says if you only have 4 pin instead of 8 you can use 4 pin but it must got in a certain way. i can't put it in the way they want because it is shaped differently - unless the manual is wrong.
Hold on a minute .. that is NOT right!

look very carefully at your PS connectors - it is not like the old MB ... triple check with the manual in your hand ... make sure of every connector

manual - look on the page for the cpu power connectors (pg 17 i think). it says exactly what i wrote, except the spot where the single cable goes in is different than in the paper manual. its the opposite spot, which is the one it fit into and still didn't work.

tried both boards again and tried resetting cmos and different power outlet. i get no video on either mobo.

should i send this board back and try a different one?

linky no workie :p

definitely try a different ... link

now ... that is puzzling about the MS PS connector ... go onto the XFX forums or begin a TS ticket while you are trying to track it down

can't you rebuild your OLD rig?

with either video card?

weird, link works for me. try going here and look up prduct code MB-N680-ILT9.

old rig will not display video either. it makes no sense. i have a support ticket in to XFX tech support but i want to get it fixed now, not wait weeks for support that might not even fix the problem. they don't even have a forum that i can see.

just read in another forum where a guy had the same issue but with an 8800gtx, tried his friend's video card (7950) and he got video. it still wouldn't post though i guess, but he foudn that the reason was because it was looking for a floppy drive and he didn't have one (same as me - no floppy). he set the bios and it worked fine then.

I can borrow a floppy drive from work to test that out too.

this sucks. I had a big problem when I originally installed my 3870 last november. I eventually figured out that one of my memory sticks had failed just before/after getting the 3870. I was so sure that it was the card/mobo/etc that it took me 5 days to finally figure it out :(

I Just noticed that a few pins are bent in the cpu socket so maybe thats why it won't work...still doesn't explain why my old hadrware won't work unless maybe i shorted it somehow.

could the bent pins possibly damage the cpu? i'm scared something might be wrong with that now.

i got return authorization to return the board to tiger direct. time to order a new board now...

i'm thinking either this or this.

leaning towards second one because its cheaper, or should i go for the 1st one since i have an e8400?

680i won't work with penryn quads iirc. I know that you're getting an e8400 instead, but if you want to oc or go with a quad at a later date it will be $70 well spent to get the 780i. Btw, have you posted this issue in the mb forum? They could probably give you better mobo advice plus they might be able to help troubleshoot in case it IS a mobo isse.

yes, bent MB pins can damage your CPU .. how did that happen, was it Open Box?

and why cannot you RMA your CPU? what if it is defective?

finally ... OMG i just had sticker shock when i saw your MB's price
:Q
... deep breath ... deep breath .. OK ...

i think my MB was $180 and i thought that was high - just to support Penryn and a 2nd GPU
--it depends on if you are satisfied with Wolfdale as the last CPU you can use in it ;)

you might consider putting your old system back together to test out your 8800 ... and you won't have a system till next week

i don't know if i bent it or not. i doubt it but i don't know for sure.
i can't find anything that seems to get good reviews that will work with my stuff and has the features i want.

i guess the only way i can rma the cpu is if it is damaged, because its oem? tiger direct and the package says its unreturnable unless defecttive.

i can't get my old hw to work with any video card! i get no video no matter what i do. everything seems to run ok but i get no signal. i've tried pretty much everything short of new cpu and mobo. i wonder if i fried that somehow? it doesn't even post

sometimes you can unbend them if it is not too bad .. i think i used an 'engineering' type pencil [with the lead out] before to straighten CPU pins.

A OEM intel CPU has a 30 day warranty - afaik - from intel [or i thought, the etailer]

so now, you rebuilt your rig and it no longer works?
:Q
- don't you have at least 2 video cards?

btw, i had to have my car towed home .. at first i thought it was the timing belt [blown engine] but note there IS compression [thankfully]. Since the engine light went on the instant before it died at the signal, i am *guessing* it is my igniter [which IS a problem with Kias] .. i HOPE so .. it's only $80 ... and of course i have to rent a car [as i ain't bugging my neighbors] :(

it could [have] be[en] much worse ... in fact, i was expecting 'much worse' all day, since i woke up .. that awful feeling of apprehension i usually get before something bad happens just kills me :p

sorry to hear about your car

with both PSes?

thanks .. i hope it is not "condolences" :p
- it is the best "bang-for-buck" car i EVER had [well, except for a 1978 Fiat X/19. i made $2,000 on it - after buying it new ($7,000) and driving it for 2 years!!]. i posted my Rio as a hot deal back in '02 as i got the "ad car at the ad price" for $5988 - BRAND NEW! .. and i put 175,000 relatively trouble-free miles on it :)

maybe i will go back to the same dealership and cut a deal for some PR in exchange for the same [or better] deal

that is the best way to buy a car. we usually put a $2,000 loser in the paper as a "one only" deal. the first person in the door gets that deal, the rest pay...a LOT more. :)

pontifex, I have one word you...it's a mobo that will run what you want...but it's not made by nvidia...yes, it's the "pirate" of all mobos...skulltrail!

screw it. i ordered the Gigabit ip35

if i do upgrade the card i'll just get a 8800GTX 768 or maybe one of the new 9800 cards when they come out
