reason for old hw not working has been discovered - bent cpu pins...
when i was taking out the old mobo, the latch for the heatsink/fan came loose and i just releatched it without thinking. well, this morning i took the cpu and heatsink out to look at it and it all came out together. cpu was stuck to heatsink.

so when it came loose, it must have come loose enough for the cpu to become unseated and shifted enough to bend the pins when i put it back in....SOAB!!!!!!!

i do have an older socket 754 (?) athlon 64 3400+ and a dfi board still together from a previous upgrade. i can't use my 8800gts but i should be able to use that pci card i brought home.

so, no gaming, but i can at least browse the web and stuff.
i'm in the process of installing that now...

ok, my system is up with the above mentioned hardware. now i know that the rest of my stuff is good, just the bent pins on the cpu from my old hw and the bent pins on the new motherboard's cpu socket.

i did next day shipping for the new Gigabit board. $110 shipped still pretty decent. to me, considering i was thinking about spending 250 on that other board.

what an ordeal! oh, and pray that my e8400 isn't dead!

is there no way for you to fix the pins?
-will they even accept a RMA with that kind of damage?

i have fixed bent pins .. it is painful and tedious, but it can be done
