Great info - thanks!

And I fully agree with your conclusion - gaming wise, any modern C2D or C2Q around 3.0GHz performs virtually same. The real gaming power is in the GPU.

Nice work. Hopefully it'll put to rest all those ridiculous "upgrade your cpu first" comments.

We normally reserve those comments for the person who asks if the latest generation video card will run well on an old single core system with about 1GB memory.

can you go even lower say 1.8 ghz to kinda simulate an e6300.
I'm not even sure I can go that low. I'll have to check the BIOS if I have time.

Thanks but why no Crysis or Unreal 3?
The E6600 benches were done before those games were available and I don't have my E6600 system anymore to re-test.

BFG, tell Hat Monster @ arstechnica that M$'s Flight Simulator X uses all four cores, and my framerates roughly doubled, using the same video card and same settings, when moving from a 2.8 Ghz Opteron 170 to a Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz.

Yes. Also I think 2 things need to be mentioned:

1) Minimum framerates - those have a significant impact on performance;

2) Not everyone plays at 1920x1440 or 1600x1200. For those who play at 1280x1024 in a cpu bottleneck can become large enough that there will be little difference between say HD 3870 and 8800GT when paired with a slower A64/X2 processor.

crysis is an important benchmark to run, supposedly the cpu and # of cores makes a big diff in actual gameplay.

Done.

Want to really test your CPU? Try out Star Trek Bridge Commander (yes from 2001). See how many ships with pulse weapons (not phaser beams) you can get battleing each other and stay above 30 fps. Crysis? Hah... Bridge Commander owns you!

I wanted to test Vampire Bloodlines as it's extremely CPU limited but I haven't found a way to reliably benchmark it.

I think next time I might use another column with 1280x960 and no AA or AF to make the results more interesting.

What are you using ... FRAPs?
No, I didn't even get that far as demo recording/playback was either broken or unreliable depending on what part of the game I tried.

You did all those benches just to have this conclusion? Why not test theories instead of testing what is already known.

Even at a middling setting of 1600x1200 with 4xAA most modern titles are clearly GPU limited.

I'm sorry you don't approve of the tests, but keep in mind they weren't designed with you as the number one priority.

What is it recently with you two guys? . . . . all these rude personal comments and snide remarks are getting really annoying [i would guess] to MOST of us.

Azn, there is no need to come into someone's thread just for the purpose of crapping on it :p
