My 8800 GTS died on me . Two questions....

In April of '07, I put together a computer with an EVGA 8800 GTS. It just crapped out on me this week. Two questions:

1) I was told that it would have lasted longer if it had heat sinks instead of a fan. Any truth to that? Are fans known to break down that quickly? I have a mostly empty Antec p182, so it was always really cool inside the case. Lots of airflow.

2) I want to replace it with a card that is comparable to what the 8800GTS was in April '07, ie, good/great, but not the best. I've been away from this stuff for a long time...any obvious recommendations?

Whats your budget? Are you looking to spend a comparable amount to what you spent in '07 on that 8800GTS? Do you have a preference for ATI or Nvidia?

I think the 4870 1gig is a good value if you don't mind ATI. The seem to go for a little over $200

If you like, or have to have, Nvidia I would look at the GTX 285 on which you can spend about $350(ish). If thats too rich for your blood the GTX 260 is close to the price of the 4870.

I am sure there are some really good deals on these going on somewhere with rebates and all that but I just list whatever I generally see something priced at.
 
I would wait for good deals on 4870 again. It was selling for 109 recently!!

what do u mean by having heatsink or fan? it would always have a heatsink, and 8800gt will always have a fan.
 
contact EVGA, they have a lifetime warranty.

Every videocard has heatsinks with a fan on top with the exclusion of passively cooled videocard which only have heatsinks big enough to cool the card.

If he bothered to register within a month of purchase. Otherwise its one year. Considering what he had a GTX 260 or HD 4870 1GB would be a nice boost.

LOL, true. I am always suprised by how many people here don't register their cards when they buy them. Now I know why companies offer the lifetime warranty, because apparently few people even take them up on it!

If you do have a warranty, get it replaced, and either enjoy a new card, or sell it to pay for most of a new one. That card will ebay for a good $80.00 and with an extra 30-40$, you can get a new 4870....sounds like a good deal to me. 🙂
