My 8600GT I just got doesn't accept the normal VGA cable that I've been seeing and using for years. I have to use an adapter that came with the card to get my VGA cable to plug into it.

Question: should I buy a new cable, one that fits the port (it actually came with two seperate ports I believe) directly rather than having to use an adapter? What kind of cable is it that I need? I want to run as high a resolution as I can.

Also, I am picking up a 28" LCD monitor today---will it likely come with the kind of cable I need so I don't have to waste money buying it?

Thanks.

Uh... welcome to DVI? You'll want to use a DVI cable to hook up to the DVI port on your new LCD... or DVI to HDMI if it's actually an LCD TV and not a monitor.

Yes, you need a DVI cable. It depends on the monitor manufacturer as far as whether or not the cable would be supplied. Check the specs on the box to make sure it has a DVI port and whether or not the cable is included in the box.

Haha, thanks guys. Well, except you Jschmuck. :)

Its not an LCD TV so I'll go with just a DVI cord.

Wait a sec, Agent, it might not have a DVI port? Its a 28" 1900x1200 new LCD monitor---what cable would it use if it doesn't use a DVI cable? I sure hope I don't have incompatable pieces.

I'll see what it comes with when I get it from UPS.

It's DVI - for sure.

It's either DVI or HDMI, some new monitors have HDMI and no DVI port since it's essentially the same thing. VGA doesn't do so well at that high resolution so I sort of doubt it will even have a VGA port. Most new monitors come with cables these days.

Great, thanks fellas. I'll check it out tonight and if it doesn't have a DVI cable stop by radio shack tomorrow.

Thanks again.
