I have my Asus set at 37% fan up to 68, then 100% after 68.

at 1200/1450, The 100% setting only kicks in a few seconds at a time while benching. While gaming it hasn't yet.

Your card is running hot.

Mine is the Asus Direct CU II model.

Well, the Asus Direct CU II is a *huge* upgrade over the reference cooler.

I think I'm going to order some aftermarket cooling for my card.

As much as i want to go Xfire i'm thinkin about just getting a 7970 in the FS section
It's a tough call. I think that the 7850s will be upwards of 50% faster once you overclock them and if the game scales well.

It's not like you need to worry about heat and noise with the Asus coolers, either. Your only limitation will be that they are 3-slot coolers.

I just ordered the Twin Turbo II. I'm still on the fence about whether or not to get another 7850. I can still get them for $230 shipped which is great.

The funny thing about all this is that you would have been better off (and spent less money) just buying a 7850 with better cooling, like the ASUS, right from the get go.

Asus cooler only has 3 heatpipes. Cooler he just ordered has 5

Yeah I regret not buying the Asus but i did the best I could with the information I had. There were no reviews of the powercolor card, but the "reference" cards didn't run as hot as my card. I didn't think the 7850 needed decent cooling but it definitely does when overclocked.

The three heatpipes on my MSI Twin Frozer III seem to be getting the job done. The sapphire cards only have two I believe. I'm sure five doesn't hurt though.

I personally wouldn't spend another dime until I try everything possible with the existing hardware. The high temps are normal with the bitcoin load, but the memory is less relevant than the core clock in this instance. I doubt you'd see the same temps in-game.

Well, I hit 80C in Unigine Heaven as well, and some games push the temps up that high as well, and the fan ramps up to an annoying level.

Not only that, but I would like to leave Bitcoin running all the time and I don't want my computer making so much noise while I'm on it.

Hopefully with the Twin Turbo II my temps will drop 20C. I have a feeling that they will. If I can overclock higher that's a bonus.

I could have dialed back the overclock to drop the temps 5C or so but I really think that I need better cooling. The stock cooler on my card is terrible.

I got in on the Powercolor 7850 deal for $230, but the cooling on the card really seems insufficient.

Overclocked to 1150mhz on the core and 5600mhz on the memory I'm sometimes hitting 85C under full load which seems way too hot to me.

Do you guys think I should take off the heatsink to make sure that there is thermal paste and to verify that everything is seated properly?

I might just have to go with aftermarket cooling. Even at stock this card hits 75C under load.

I have the Diamond version of that card http://www.compusa.com/applications/...?EdpNo=2406379 and if you're talking about the same powercolor version (there are two PC 7850s) the Diamond and the Powercolor are identical. 1150Mhz is big OC for that card (unless you have the larger version) espeically since your over-volting by 20% if you used CCC to do it. The heat-sink on this card is a radial heatsink, much like a smaller version of the MIS R6850 which is a phenomenal heat-sink. The radial style heatsinks often do much better cooling than the inline style of say a 560TI. I had a 560 TI 2GB and I took it back because it was runing at 74*C at 57% because the auto fan runs low to keep the noise down. If i cranked up the fan I could get 73 at 99% but it sounded like a jet engine but I digress.

My Diamond 7850 is currently at 1050Mhz Core and soon to be 1450Mhz memory with 20% over-volting and runing at 84-86*C in a NZXT Vulcan mATX case. From what I'm seeing 83*C is about average for max OC with CCC and this card. Now, one reviewer of the powercolor version says he got @1350mhz core clock with 1.3v over-volting out of it but he installed an Accelero Twin Turbo II aftermarket cooler and voided the warranty to do it. >http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131464
UPDATE >> HA I THINK THAT'S YOU SO NVM lol hey if you can advise on if there is anything tricky to the heatsink please let me know :)

I intend to attempt to remove the heatsink and apply better thermal compound because by most of the 7850 pictures out there with the heat-sink off you can see the thermal compound is that same thick grey clay crap that just about every OEM cheaps out with. Dell and HP use it and that stuff is crap. I'm gonna put a nice creamquie like the Cooler Master (I like it some complain because it looks like glue but it's not sticky and won't bridge multipliers) which i've used for about a year on everything from work CPUs to home rigs and it should drop me 5-10*C (crossing fingers) I hope.

I'll post finding. If anyone has removed the heatsink on either the Diamond or Radeon small 7850 please post tips/steps if you have them. I can probably figure it out but a road map is always best :)

Peace.

Hmm my ASUS DCII 7850 is running at a peak of 79C under full load skyrim high texture mods, probably because the card's fans are pointing down and the case fan is on the top
