My 6400 results

So I've been playing with my voltage, and I've found my 6400 doesn't mind dropping some volts.

Rig is in sig. Still oc'd to 3.2 @ 400x8

Where I'm at now is the voltage set in bios at 1.275V. At idle cpu-z reports 1.296V. Under load, it bounces around from 1.248V - 1.264V - 1.280V. It spends 80% of its time at 1.264 though.

My temps are down almost 10C at load from where i started my voltage when i oc'd originally at 1.375V.

I'll probably try pushing the voltage down a bit more over the next few days until i hit instability of some sort.

I'd try pushing my FSB up, but my Ram is rated 5-5-5-15 at DDR800, and isn't an OC'ers set.

I wonder how well this chip would oc with some decent ram?

Any comments?

I'm in the same boat as you are. S3 + 6400 + 5-5-5-15 RAM.

My 6400 will do that-- @3.2 it will boot to windows and run (but is not Orthos stable at 1.275). It will pass unlimited hours of orthos @ 3.2g w/ stock volts, which is pretty nice I think.

However, mine will not be Orthos stable at 3.4g or greater with any amount of volts I put to it-- either the RAM or CPU tests.

With a little extra volts on the RAM and MCH, I figured my kit could do DDR850, but my rig will not pass. I've been wondering the same thing as you-- should I get some D9s and see if that will let me go higher?

I'm impressed by the S3's flexibility and stability. I'm running at 3.22Ghz on my E6300 (see my sig) at 460x7 on 1.3375 which is just over stock. I'm trying to decide between dropping the volts back to stock and testing it, or going for 486x7 for 3.4Ghz. My RAM is at 5-5-5-15 but given that it was rated for DDR2-533 the fact that it's running at 920 is testament to micron. <3 my handpicked D9 sticks .

Well, after a little more playing around, i found i could tighten up my ram's timings beyond manufacturers spec.

I've got it running at 4-4-4-12 at DDR2-800. Stable under orthos for over 20 hours. I tried bumping my FSB up a bit, but it wasn't orthos stable, even at 5-5-5-15. I'm not really interested in bumping the voltage up from the 2.1V it's at now, as i'm trying to remain a little conservative in stressing my components.

My temps have dropped a bit in the last few days as well. With orthos running for over an hour, My cores are sitting at 42C or below, depending on which program you believe. My screenshot shows TAT, Coretemp, and Speedfan's readings, as well as my tightened timings, and Cpuz's voltage reading.

I'm really impressed with the parts that I've gotten. Everything has exceeded my expectations. My cpu is running an awesome overclock, while undervolted from 1.325 to 1.275 (set in bios). On a $30 HSF, it's running cooler than most similar results i've seen on the forums. My memory is tighter timings than spec as well.

I really wish i had run some benchmarks on my old system before i upgraded. I was running an Athlon XP 1.4GHz (can't remember if it was an 1800+ or 1600+) with a Radeon 9500Pro and SDRam. I think the system was an underperformer as well, because of a cheap mobo. The difference is unbelievable. Virtual machines on my new rig run better than my old system.

I appreciate all the knowledge here, as i did a pile of reading on AT before purchasing, and before overclocking.

nice results! i have a 3050 on the way and hope to do push it to the max.... but low vcore overclocking is always neat as well!

3.2 below stock volts is impressive. good job!
