My 533a FC-PGA Celery is like a FURNACE!

I have a problem. My comp is a 533a fc-ppga Celeron on ASUS P3V4X with 128mb PC100 ram, Golden ORB air cooler, and two 80mm case fans. The CPU is guaranteed to 800mhz and the guy told me I didn't need PC133 RAM to overclock it.

The problem is, my Motherboard Temp is not bad and is ALWAYS in the Mid 30's...but my CPU temperature is outrageous! When doing nothing, just sitting int he Win98se screen, the temp is in the mid 50's! Then, when I play Quake3 Arena or run Prime95, the temp SOARS to the mid 60's, consistently! Occasionally going over 70!

And this is all Celcius, I don't understand what the heck is going on here, I have the Golden ORB, and two 80mm case fans, isn't that enough?

I am using Motherboard Monitor 4 to check the temps....and the Voltage is at 1.70. (I have tried 1.75, no diff.)

edit: this is when it is OC'ed to 800mhz

Thanks.

Hmmm.. My mobo temp was 32 with 2 fans and is now 27 with 3 fans with heavy use. Can't measure my CPU.

What un-overclocked temps are you running? With default voltage? Are you SURE the orb is installed correctly? What are you using to obtain the CPU temp? Can you verify it's accurate? If all is correct, and you are still getting those temps, that CPU may not last too long.

The temperature misreadings from the P3V4X only show after the system comes out of standby mode. I believe that the 1005 BIOS update corrects this issue.

I too have an Asus P3V4X. With a generic dual cooler on my Pentium III 650 @ 975MHz, I too have seen my temperature reading spike very high. After putting on an Alpha P3125 cooler, the temperature reading have lowered greatly. The temps use to go as high as 66 degrees C, but now never go above 52 degrees C. This is even at 1.85 volts.

Does the Orb feel hot to the touch when your temps are near 60C?
Remove your Orb, check for proper amount of thermal compound, reinstall the orb, check for good fit.
