Eh, you can't expect current systems to last as long as say, the NES. Cartridge based consoles had no moving parts.

The fact that your PS1 still works is amazing. You either didn't get a close-to-launch system or didn't play it much. The first wave(s) had a lot of problems with the laser track wearing out.

No, it wasn't a launch PSX, the other consoles were all pretty close to launch (N64 and Gamecube I got release day). I also beat the HELL out of my gamecube, literally, and it still works like a charm 6.5 years later.

I can understand not expecting a 360 to last 20 years, but come on....being HAPPY about it lasting 8 months? I've had my PS3 a year now, if it died tomorrow, I'd be pissed as hell.

Oh I agree for sure, even though they're more technical, they should still last at least 5 years. If you buy a launch console you should NOT have to replace it before the next generation version comes out. Period.

I'm a little torn. The 360 has more games that I like, and I really want rock band...but all indications are its a piece of shit. Like Deeko said, if I'm going to spend that amount of money on a console I expect it to work for more then a year. Maybe the new ones are better, but its not like the 360 came out last week...any launch issues really ought to have been settled by now.

The PS3 is actually getting cheap enough now that it seems like a more viable option, but it doesn't have dead rising on it!

Bah, there still aren't enough games of substance on either console for me to justify buying one anyway.

When did I said I was happy that my 360 died? Of course I wanted the thing to work as it's suppose to, but I was being realistic and was pleasantly surprised that a refurbished launch unit lasted 8 months. We all know many of those launch units were shitty and there's no point in throwing a hissy fit when one died on you.

Maybe I'm just a mellow guy and don't let little things in life get to me easily. Maybe since I'm a tech enthusiast (owning all consoles in existence), so when one of my toys croaked, I still have plenty of other things to play with. Or maybe because every time this thing breaks, it'll on Microsoft's dimes.

I'm not an MS fanboy nor am I making excuses for them, but MS actually loses money having me as a customer. First they sell me the console at a loss, then the customer service and repair cost. Not to mention all the shipping costs. I imagine overnighting a 7 lbs package from Texas to California ain't cheap, and they'll be doing that 12 times total with this upcoming repair. Plus I never buy 360 games at retail, always get it used or second hand for cheap, so they're not getting royalty from my game purchases.

All I lose is time, but come on, we're talking about video games playing time here, it's not like I'm out there curing cancer. ;P

I understand - and sure, it's nice of Microsoft to own up to their mistakes and offer replacements but still - it's frustrating and inconvenient to have to get it repaired all the time, and I definitely would not be pleasantly surprised if my (new or replacement) console lasted 8 months. I'd be pissed that yet another one died on me.

Interesting thread...I just got my first RROD. Got my system for Christmas 06, no problems until now.
Tried to play Monday afternoon...RROD. Set up an incident online with MS on Monday evening (my daughter stayed home sick from school and had been playing it 6 hours straight). Tuesday night, tried the "towel trick" and it started working again. Last night, the video kept messing up during an online Halo3 multiplayer match...but no video problems later playing campaign. Then had video problems (blotchy, whites getting a checkerboard pattern) playing 3d ultra mini golf.

Hopefully I will be getting my box to mail the console to MS today.......
