My 360 was banned, should I spend $299 on a new 360 elite or PS3?

Do I spend my money on an Xbox or PS3?

I don't know much about how xbox live works, but how do they ban the actual machine? I thought they banned your account. If it's the machine itself, I'm guessing it must be pretty easy to bypass, I'm sure there's resources online - just don't do whatever it is you did, again 😛. Probably goes by a unique ID, maybe the mac address, or something.

I was banned for modifying the console to play burned games.

They ban the machine itself, and it's not at all easy to bypass. I've been in the xbox hacking scene since the first one. You have to change the unique console ID on the Xbox with a legitimate one, and if two consoles have the same ID they'll ban them both.

The only way to change the ID is if you know the encryption key the CPU uses, which one can only get if you haven't run the updates on the console in the last 6-8 months.

Put out an ad on craigslist for and older 360 that hasn't been connected to the interweb?

Not going to buy an older 360, chances of RROD are high and wouldn't be under warranty. I don't have the CPU key for my xbox, and most of the ones that haven't been connected are going for as much as a new Xbox because they're in high demand now that the doors have been blow right open with ISO loaders and all.

As of last week they began banning consoles with replaced keys or "Jtagged" as they're called. They can now detect and ban them anyways so replacing the key from another console is rather pointless now.

Ah, didn't know that either. Yet another reason not to buy a used one 😛

The last con on your PS3 Con's list is why I'd buy another 360. If all your friends have a 360 and you want to game with them go that route.

I bought my 360 used and before I paid the guy I called Xbox and made sure it wasn't banned. He brought it over to my place, I hooked it up and had it on XBL before I handed him the check.

That was in April or so, hasn't given me a lick of trouble yet (was the first round of the Jasper Arcade units). If you've got a 360 HDD just get an Arcade and swap your console out.

I have both. My xbox gets 10 times more game time. The PS3 is mainly just a BR player. The vast majority of my gaming is online and the 360 is just better in that respect. I have played MW2 on both and sometimes getting the games I want on the PS3 can a while because there are not as many users on.

get whatever you would rather get, not what strangers on the internet that have no clue what you like want you to get based on their biases.

360 for one reason; when my secondary PS3 died recently, I lost all my savegames; you can't put in a hard drive into another PS3 without it being re-formated, requiring you to manually back up saves on a USB stick.

The "PS3 has no games" con is really not true anymore. There are quite a few good PS3 exclusives, and enough games out now that finding something to play isn't hard.

I have both and prefer the PS3. All my friends have 360 as well and that's the only reason why I got it. If you already have games and everyone you know has one just get another one. Playing with with others is always better.

pretty much this. though my 360 gets more playtime, thanks to multiplayer games like halo 3 and geometry wars, i prefer my ps3 because i feel it has much better single player games like uncharted 2, mgs4, etc. also, my ps3 is the original 60GB, so it plays all of my original ps2 games as well, which i have a TON of.

May as well get a PS3. You know you want it and I know you want it. And I know you know you want it. And you know I know you want it.

You also have an XBOX so the PS3 is a must.

There's nothing on it that I really care about, and it was expensive. I just got it for Bluray, and I should have waited and just gotten a BR player.

Well you have quite possibly the best Blu-ray player out there. It gets the most updates compared to other BR players plus you can play PS3 exclusives on it.

Just pick up a new 360 Arcade. You'll be able to slap your HDD onto it.

Why would you switch to a PS3? You already have money invested in the 360 with games, Live and any additional accessories you've bought.

If you still want a BD player, get a stand alone player. There are plenty available now under $200.

PS3 can do distributed computing projects, like Folding@Home. (Or Primegrid - see my sig.)

Pphhhtt. 🙄

I have the three major consoles and here's how often I play them.

360 - every day
PS3 - maybe 3 times a month unless I am working on beating a game
Wii - never.
