At least I still have the extended RROD warranty, but I am still baffled as to why they just aren't replacing the defective XBOX 360's as they come into repair. Instead, they send more defective XBOX 360's back out into the wild.

😕

Some get replaced with an Opus chipset (Falcon chipset with no HDMI). Some don't. I don't think anybody but MS knows the rhyme or reason as to why they do this. At this point, replacing returns with a Jasper chipset seems like it would save them money in the long run.

If they replace my HDMI one with a non-HDMI one, they are going to have big trouble on their hands!

That's a very good question. It could go a long way in redeeming loyalty but, as with most American companies, Microsoft is focused on the bottom line. Remember when Ford continued to let people die due to their defective tires because the cost-benefit favored doing nothing? Well, this is Microsoft's thinking as well: "Fuck 'em. Until it hits my profits, I ain't doing shiiit".

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. For some reason, I thought you had a Xenon when you have a Zephyr. They only replace non-HDMI 360s with non-HDMI 360s. If you have an HDMI 360, you'll get one back in return.

There is a small chance I might keep the repaired XBOX for a few more months as a NetFlix streaming box, but I will not be paying to re-up Live once it runs out next year.

Playon takes care of that. You can check it out for free for 14 days, $40 if you want to keep it(not a recurring fee).

Perhaps this would be a good time for you to play around with the Beatles? Will give you a chance to check it out without having to be bothered about the unfortunate DLC situation you are currently in.

Playon has NetFlix streaming over the PS3/360? I might have to check it out so I'm not beholden to Live Gold (really, the only reason I have it is because of NetFlix streaming).

I'm confused about the Beatles comment. My 360 is the system where I have all of the plastic instruments (heh...), and it's broken. I don't have anything for the PS3, and I sure as heck am not going to drop $240+ on The Beatles: Rock Band. I don't even like the Beatles! 😛

The DLC situation is quite a mess...it'd work on any new 360 I get (due to it being tied to your console and/or your GamerTag), but I'm really just turned off to the whole idea of the 360 right now. Still, even if I decided to ditch it, I'd only be out like $50 worth the DLC, give or take. The only thing I bought were Rock Band songs, and I don't even play half of them any more.

My thinking is just take a wait and see approach...check out all the options for my 360, and maybe sell it and buy the Rock Band 3 bundle + the first two Rock Band games cheap for the PS3.

Yep.

Heh, brain dead moment, lack of instruments would be an issue 😛

The RB2 bundle has been clearanced at GS, has been going for $100 which I thought was decent for the whole set if your local GS still has some in stock(they have been moving fast in both stores in my town). Not trying to push you in that direction, but the game and full instrument set for $100 is a hell of a deal IMO.

Cool, I will have to research this Playon more.

I'm taking a more "wait and see" type of approach. I'm in no hurry to repurchase a game I already own, so I might just end up waiting for the inevitable Rock Band 2, which according to past precedence, should be coming to a store near you soon. 😛

Oddly enough, GS does still have the RB2 bundle at $100, but the rest of the stores (Amazon, etc.) jacked the price back up to $140. 😕

Get it repaired it, sell it, get a Jasper. I ended up doing this when my launch died shortly after the Falcon came out. I was only out $50 or so for the "upgrade" IIRC.

Yeah man when my original 360 died, it was during xmas and there was some crazy gamestop trade in deal where you get 60 dollars extra for 360 and ps3 tradeins.

So I traded in my replacement, the guy let me open the arcade bundle to trade in the memory card and games that were bundled, then I traded in my 20g hd cuz I had a 120 already and I actually think I got a small credit when all was said and done.

Not defending Microsoft here at all but it is funny you don't think Sony is the same way. I could pull out a list of crappy things Sony (and of course M$) has done to consumers but why would I? I am not consumed by it.

I was also one of the people considering myself lucky to have a first revision 360 that was still working a couple years later. It was very very rarely used, and that's probably the only reason it lasted as long as it did. Turned it on one day roughly two weeks before the warranty was up and it was toast. At first I was like whew, good thing it happened now while it's still under warranty, but then I realized it's 100% guaranteed to die again soon. The average selling price for these older units without a hard drive is roughly $70-100, definitely a lose/lose situation no matter what I decide to do with it.

well the problem is that all of these new models, even the Jasper, still have the damn X-Clamp design holding the heatsink, which is the reason for RRoD in the first place.

If you think a Jasper has you safe from the RRoD, you are mistaken 🙂

exactly.

The problem isn't so much the heat that's caused by the gpu, it's the mounting system for the gpu heatsink.

That said, your average jasper should last you a bit longer than say a xenon.

Look on craigslist. There's many people that will fix your 360 for a $20-$30 fee if you don't want to send it back to MS to get another console that'll fail.

Well the warranty is now expired so the next time it dies it won't be going back to MS. I could do a quick fix myself rather than pay someone on Craigslist if need be, but I wouldn't expect that to last either. It has to be something more complicated than just the X-clamps, if it were that simple there's no way MS wouldn't have pinpointed it and provided a proper fix by now. We're talking about one of the largest corporations in the world losing over 1 billion dollars on this issue, sorry but I don't buy that the X-clamp is the problem.

Well, there's a multitude of problems with the GPU itself... crappy solder, poor manufacturing methods, bad xclamp.

It's just that xclamp causes the most problems. I've repaired several rrod 360's, and all of those 360's had their gpu and cpu heatsink loose. It was still attached, but it would barely make contact with the gpu. Why? Because the xclamp was a horrible way to secure a heatsink down.

The running theory, was that the GPUs up to the Jasper produced so much heat that the xclamp deformed over time causing failure. I'm not sure how accurate this is, because frankly, I don't think the gpu can produce the heat required to deform the metal.

That said, 95% of rrod's are fixed by replacing the xclamps and reattaching the heatsink much more securely to the board. Some will take the fix for a long time, some break again after a few months... just the nature of the beast. I don't know myself what MS is thinking. Then again, they've spent a long time denying there was a problem in the first place. Just because they make a lot of money doesn't make them the smartest out there.

If Microsoft had any credibility, you would be able to take ANY 360 with a RROD to any local retailer and exchange it for a new unit.
No labels
No mailing
No waiting
Its just baffling how they've gotten away with this for so long.

I too have been fixing 360's afflicted with the RROD (or even no video output) by replacing the x-clamp heat sink mounts with bolts/washers. All three I've fixed so far work great. I've also repaired a couple of optical drives that wouldn't work correctly. I wouldn't trust MS to fix your RROD properly because as other posters suggested, they won't truly fix the underlying cause of the problem so it will just fail again. The fix isn't even that hard. If you've installed heatsinks on motherboards, it is nothing for you. Just need a torx 10 and torx 8 screwdrivers/bits, the necessary bolts/washers, and some thermal grease.

So, I just got my 360 back from Microsoft. What a hassle it has been. Long story short, UPS is annoying when they keep delivering between 10-2 and you work full-time, therefore having to pay UPS to have them deliver it somewhere else. 😡

Anyway, it looks like they sent me a new unit, since it had instructions about having to reconnect my controller and re-download all of my stuff. Joy, what fun! Looks like this might be time to do the license migration?

The new unit was manufactured 2009/09/10. Going to go back through the thread to see how to do the license migration, and also maybe research whether it's a Jasper or not...

Edit: Do I need to do a license migration? After reading the FAQ, it sounds like I don't have to...

How do I tell if it's a Jasper if the power supply isn't included in the box? I tried reading the FAQ, and it says look for 12.1A, but when I look at the back of my 360, it says 12V, 16,5A, 5V, 1A, in that order. Like I said before, it has a manufactured date of 2009/09/10. It can't be a Falcon, because those are no longer in production, and it can't be an Opus, because it has HDMI, so it has to be a Jasper, right?

What a pain in the rear...I'll just stick with the PS3 from now on. And all I got for this was a lousy 1 month XBOX Live Gold card. I should have gotten a free 60 GB HDD for this headache!
