My 360 RROD'd Last Night...

So, I think that Microsoft heard me talking about how my XBOX 360 is working after two years, and decided to hit the killswitch to make mine RROD. 🙁

Almost exactly two years after I bought my XBOX 360, it RROD'd last night. It showed no signs that anything was wrong...just boom, dead. I had a Rock Band 2 session the night before, and had just watched MythBusters HD on NetFlix a few hours before it died. My wife got home from work, turned on the XBOX to watch some NetFlix streaming, and I heard her ask:

"Why is the XBOX flashing red?"

I just shook my head and . It was kept in a wide open space with plenty of room to breathe, and I kept it horizontally placed. It was a Zephyr model 20 GB Pro with HDMI.

Good thing I decided to buy Batman: AA for the PS3! But now, I'm down to literally two console games to play: Batman and MGS4. This especially stinks though, because I had just used the Rock Band: ACDC Export code the night before it died. :|

I should have known this was coming, but this incident has really destroyed my trust in the Microsoft XBOX 360. Now I'm one of many thrown on the RROD repair treadmill, sending mine back in for repair, getting mine back "repaired"/a similar model, never knowing if/when the fixed/replaced XBOX will break down. I had a launch PSOne and a fat PS2 (with DREs) die on me with widely known and reported issues, and that shook my trust in Sony, but at least Sony fixed the problems with your console and they never happened again. With the 360, you just never know. The repairs might take, or they might not, and back it goes. You might get a replacement that is good, or it could be bad, but you won't know until it dies.

I also heard that you have to provide your own box for shipping now? Is this true? I've never had a reason to investigate the RROD repair/replacement process before...do you have to pay shipping charges too? How long does the process take from start to finish?

I know, I know...QQ more, etc., but I just find it ironic that I've been recently talking about how my 360 has been reliable, and poof, it goes up in smoke.

Dang that sucks. Was it the old one or a Falcon or newer?

I think you provide a box and print out a shipping tag on their site. Not sure though.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that can tell you for sure. haha. That sucks though, sorry to hear it.

It was only a matter of time. It's a design flaw - anyone who has an old 360 that hasn't died yet is probably going to have it die eventually unless they rarely play it. At least it died when you still have a warranty.

Microsoft has handled the whole RRoD fiasco reasonably well except that they keep fixing the things and sending them back only to have them die again. That really bugs me. And personally, I think they should have extended the warranty to 5 years for the RRoD on the launch systems, because people are having out of warranty systems die because of a clear design flaw, and that's not right.

Yes, which is why I'm probably not going to keep it once I get it back from repair, because it is highly likely that it will just break down again in the future and have to be shipped off for repair...again and again and again.

I know that I am not buying any more games for the XBOX 360, that's for sure. There is a small chance I might keep the repaired XBOX for a few more months as a NetFlix streaming box, but I will not be paying to re-up Live once it runs out next year.

My original Xbox died on Christmas Day 2007, exactly one year after I originally received it. That sucked because I had COD4 and The Orange Box waiting for me. The UPS guy that delivered my replacement said that they had been shipping "a ton of these things."

The replacement has been running strong with heavy usage but I actually wouldn't mind if it died so I'd have an excuse to upgrade to a Jasper Elite with 120GB and HDMI. 😱

This doesn't make sense. It does suck, but you've got a launch model (Xenon/Zephyr) and the problems with those are well known. Unfortunately, they are quite likely to die at some point. At least MS covers it under warranty, though it's very annoying to be without your console.

I have to agree that giving people older models back in exchange is stupid - they should start handing out Jaspers for the repair to fix it once and for all.

Please read WHY it destroyed my trust. It's because of the RROD treadmill, instead of just giving you a newer console with the design flaw fixed. Sony took care of the issues with the launch PSOnes and PS2s...they died, you sent them in, they got fixed/replaced and it never happened again. Microsoft just keeps you on the RROD treadmill.

That's the only part that doesn't make sense... 😛

While I completely agree with you on that, maybe you should see if you actually end up with this problem before complaining about it. 😛

True, but it does seem to be a widespread occurrence, and it would logically make sense, since they are either "repairing" your current XBOX (thus the flaw still exists and will rear its ugly head sooner or later), or they will send you another equal-type model of XBOX which has the same flaw anyway (so it will eventually break down too, it's just a matter of when).

It's just bad business on the part of Microsoft. Instead of futzing around with this nonsense, either fix the problem in your current XBOX 360 for real or send a Falcon/Jasper Arcade unit or something that they can just plug their HDD into and be good to go without worry of the RROD. It would probably be cheaper than constantly repairing multiple RRODs or continually shipping out launch/Zephyr 360s as replacements which will just break down anyway, thus having to be sent back for repair or replacement.

It's a vicious circle.

Get it repaired it, sell it, get a Jasper. I ended up doing this when my launch died shortly after the Falcon came out. I was only out $50 or so for the "upgrade" IIRC.

well the problem is that all of these new models, even the Jasper, still have the damn X-Clamp design holding the heatsink, which is the reason for RRoD in the first place.

If you think a Jasper has you safe from the RRoD, you are mistaken 🙂

That's what I'm thinking. I've been running out of room on my HDD anyway, so if I could get a decent price for my repaired 360, I might do that.

But, then I have to go box hunting to make sure the XBOX 360 I'm purchasing is the "right version". :disgust:

Haha sorry, it was early. Yeah definitely not surprised to hear it broke. Glad to hear it wasn't a Falcon or Jasper though.

All Arcades versions on shelves are Jasper (unless some odd store has really old inventory). All Elites in the new boxes are Jasper.

What is the new box? How can I tell it's a "New Elite"? I haven't seen an Elite box since it was packaged with Forza 2. 😛

Link - You'll also be able to tell because only the Arcade and Elite versions are listed on the box.

So the only surefire way is to look at the side or the back of the box? What if the store has it behind a case and won't let you? 😛

Well, no. The new Elite box looks different than the older Elite packaging so that is a pretty easy way to tell.

Time to get a Falcon 512MB Arcade unit and sell the refurbished 360 on eBay when it comes in eh? There are much worse fates than being forces to play MGS4 and Batman AA for a couple of weeks too 😉.

Ahh, ok thanks. So, if the box is grey, then it's an old Elite. 😛

True, but it is a hassle, because now I have to wait for my current XBOX to come back from repairs, then I have to sell it on eBay/Craigslist. I'd rather just have one that works, period. :|

Yes, Batman: AA is fun, but I haven't played MGS4 since I beat it over a year ago, and have no intention of ever playing it again, but that's a subject for another thread. 😉

All of my Rock Band and GH stuff is on the XBOX, so that's out until it gets repaired and/or I get a new one.

I have this image of a crying RyanPaulShaffer clicking the plastic buttons of an old Les Paul guitar in sad bluesy rhythms, then staring over at a detached grey cord and HDMI cable where is 360 used to be, and subsequently breaking down into mad sobs of anguish screaming why God, why meeeee!!!!

Naw, I just laughed and shook my head when my wife asked me why the XBOX was "blinking red". 😀

I don't think I have any Les Paul guitars either, unless the GHWT guitars are Les Pauls. I traded in my GH3 guitar a long time ago, so I have 2 GHWT guitars, a wired Xplorer and a wired Strat. 😛

At least I still have the extended RROD warranty, but I am still baffled as to why they just aren't replacing the defective XBOX 360's as they come into repair. Instead, they send more defective XBOX 360's back out into the wild.

😕
