Every WD drive I've owned has failed on me. I'm on my 2nd 120GB WD for my XBox now. (Only bought it b/c they had a killer deal on it) Guess I see why now.

And just FYI, everyone has problems with particular brands. There's no one "uber reliable" brand really.

I've had good luck with many WD drives and even the Maxtor drive I'm using now. I did RMA a WD 40GB drive for a new one a couple years back that's still going strong on this machine.

I personally don't feel any of the top 3 are any worse than each other...

Never had a problem w/ the two ro three WD drive's I've owned, actually, I've (crosses fingers) only had one drive die on me...an old Toshiba Laptop drive, IIRC. I had a maxtor drive that was...iffy, and I took it out of service, but it didn't actually lose any data.

One of my Seagate 120 GB SATA drives is dying, there goes my pron collection! :(

I'm doing a surface scan on it now to see if theres any way to salvage any of the goodies.

I hate it when a drive dies!

BTW I've had this drive for about 2.5 years now.

I've had no problems with my 80gb WD drive, and I've abused that one like mad..

IDE, to USB, back to IDE, to SATA Dongle, to USB to IDE again...

I've had a WD 120gig going strong for over a year now so I can't complain yet. That system was built in Feb 2004 so I haven't had any really long term hard drives yet.

In my second system I have a Hitachi SATA drive. My 200gig backup drive that is in an external enclosure is a Seagate. I've got quite a variety and it should be interesting to see which one gives me problems first, if ever.

I've used Western Digitals for years. IBM and WD are the only drives I will install for people. THe ones that fail seemed to be between 6.4 gig and 15 gig.

1. Seagate
2. Samsung
3. Maxtor

that's my personal preference anyway ...

we've had 3 maxtors go out in a short period of time, so maxtor is at the end of the list for me.

WD is actually a very stable experience, so is seagate.

over 100 computers built for customers all using WD HD's and only 1 dead after 2 years. Epox MB's are a different story. 5 of them have died so far due to bad capacitors.

Stick it in the freezer for 8 hours and quick back it up. I run mine in a cooler of ice when I have problems but the freezer will work just fine.
