My 200GB Maxtor drive just started Clicking....

Damnit, my 200gb Maxtor just started clicking. I was having such good luck with Hard drives lately too.

I guess I gotta figure out a way to backup 170gigs of stuff. Bloody hell. It's going to take forever, since whenever I try to access the drive, it clicks and moves data around very slowly. I doubt I'll get anything backed up before it dies.

Any suggestion people? I've read about the "freezer trick" (throw it into the freezer) but that one kinda worries me. I've heard that the WD drives use a program called Data Life Guard, but that's not for Maxtor. I'd call Maxtor today, but they're closed until monday.

I've read that it's better to leave your computer on all the time so that the harddrives aren't constantly heating and cooling and instead they just constantly stay really, really hot.

Argh!!!!

Get the important stuff off now.
Freeze it
Get as much as you can.
When you get your new drive, buy it a bay cooler.

I can't move anything very quickly at all at this point. It just keeps clicking. I'm wondering if I should just toss it into the freezer and then try to get as much as possible.

Yeah, if you can.

We had the same problem at work. Took 4 hours to copy over 1GB of info.

Does freezing it increase performance at all? I really wish I could get some more info on what to expect when I toss my harddrive into a freezer for an hour? Do I put it in a ziplock bag? I can't believe I'm asking these questions.

I always thought the freezer trick was for "sticksion". Is clicking caused by too much "sticksion" in the head mechanism? or just the controller screwing up?

Update:

I turned off the computer for about 25 minutes. I got a ziplock, but I decided to see if just turning the computer back on would give me any luck. I turned it back on, and I've been able to backup about 1 gig so far at full speed. It's backing some more stuff right now, but hopefully I'll get the rest of my important stuff before it starts clicking again. After that, I can always try the freezer trick, but atleast I haven't lost all of it. Thanks for all the replies guys, and remember, BACK YOUR STUFF UP!

Yup, just a lesson... I backup my music on 3 different drives (well I'm a dj, I guess if I lost that music I'd be out of business)

I don't think the freezer trick will work for you. I've used it myself but I've never heard of it working for a drive that has developed the click of death.
