I didn't read the entire thread....but don't buy from the dealer!

Goto a local tireshop, there's one in Toronto called Steelecase Tires..and get Nokian Hakka2s. You don't have to get it in your tiresize, you can always change the sizes slightly as long as you get the approriate steel rim. I suggest getting winter tires on seperate steel wheels so that way its an easy swap when summer arises.
OK, what size range then?

Any effect on the vehicle stability control or ABS?

Similar size range...keep hte same width and diameter...ask the tire store to see which ratio would be most suitable.

There shouldn't be any adverse effect on ABS or VSC since your not going to outragoeus (ie: from a 16inch rim with 225width to a 14inch rim with 165 width).

Wow, that's pricy. My Toyota has a pretty uncommon size tire also (225/50R16) but it costed about 500 bones for a decent set of Z rated BF Goodrich's inluding mount/balance and taxes. Got them at Costco though, which is a plus since they rotate and balance for free whenever you feel like it, so I just drop it off while I'm shopping there.

I was in Costco just this past week and I asked the guys there about winter tires for the Prius. They seemed clueless, and didn't even have car info on any 2004 car models, much less the Prius.

Yours might be better I don't trust my local Costco...

If it's really that much to go with the stock size go with the one size down 185/60/15, your speedometer will be off by 2-5% depending on the speed you're going.

You could just tell them the size.. But yeah I don't trust places like that either.
