I just went to Micro Center today and picked up a SMC Wireless G Router SMC2804WBR for $94.99 with a $25 Rebate = $69.99. I did some research on this router and all i hear is good stuff. I'm using it as we speak and it's purty good so far. Just a couple of days back i got the Microsoft version of the Wireless G and it sucked. I had to reset it over and over again. So far this router kicks ass. Also they had some TDK DVD+R's for cheap too. 5 for $5.99. I went to the Micro Center in Irvine/Tustin.

Here is a like to the rebate:

Have fun!

Good deal, but does anyone know what's up with 802.11i, the wireless security standard? I remember hearing that most wireless routers would be upgradeable but I also heard that the first routers would be available over the summer. Did it die or change into something else or just turn out to be worthless? Anyone know?

No idea on that question...

On the router, a similar deal exists at Best Buy, last night I picked up the Microsoft branded wireless-G router for $99 with a $20 rebate, making it something like $79 (plus tax, postage stamp, etc). I also just saw in the mail after I got home, their standard "preferred customer" coupon pack in the mail (See "Best Buy Preferred Customer Weekend" thread elsewhere under Hot Deals). In there is a 10% off coupon, which is of course used on the original price, knocking another $10 off of it, bringing it to $69 + tax and etc. So if you don't have a micro center nearby, but do have Best Buy or prefer the MS router, you should be able to get about the same deal. The sale on the router lasts through Saturday, and the coupons start before then (Friday I think).

I'll take my coupon and the router in to try for a small refund. Others should be able to get it at time of purchase.

I don't know about the 802.11i but have you guys seen the Netgear WGT624? It supposedly runs at 108 Mbps. I guess they some how doubled the 802.11g standard? Anybody know how this works? I think you need to use a special Netgear wireless card to make it run that fast.

Yeah, i think it is similar to 802.11b PBCC modulation enhanced mode, which use two channel to double the bit rate. So, 54Mbps x 2 = 108Mbps.

correct me if i am wrong coz I only have the 802.11b data sheet.

For the 802.11i(or so-called WPA 2), it is not out yet. WIFI will do a intermediate solution called WPA. It is being utilized now. Dlink 802.1g router has the capability, but only when you have Winxp. Other OS need special client software so the added cost is preventive for vendor to provide it.
