My 13yo Son tested positive for ANA

Crap. It's not bad enough that my wife has lupus. Some days she can barely move. Ever since, our doctor has been wanting to test the kids too for related diseases. Hence the ANA test.

Of course there are many reasons for a positive ANA, including a mild infection like a Cold. And even so, a positive ANA may not mean Lupus. We're doing a follow up test in a couple weeks to see if he shows up positive again. If so then there are more tests that can narrow down the cause.

But I'm scared for him. 13 year olds shouldn't have this kind of sh!t.

Only if you're being chased by someone who wants to kill you. Hopefully it's a mummy who won't be running any faster than you.

Lupus is debilitating and very painful, but it won't kill you on its own.

Well, that's good to hear (sort of). Still, I agree that a 13yr old should not have that type of crap. He should have 30 years of good health before he has to start thinking about that stuff.

I'd forgotten your wife had lupus, sorry man🙁

Hopefully, by the time your son is old enough to start showing symptoms, (if he ever does) there will be a lot better treatment for it.
 
Im sorry to hear Duroc, thats really tough news, my friend was recently diagnosed with graves disease and that sucked to hear as well...Is there any treatment?

My ex-gf died a few years ago due to complications from lupus. She was 23.

I hope everything turns out ok for your son DurocShark!

My Wife has Sjogrens syndrom, her sister has Rheum. Arthritis, her other sister has Schleroderma, her brother has tested positive for ANA (but hasn't gone back to the doctor to see what exactly he has), her dad tested positive for lupus, and now my 11yo Daughter was diagnosed Rheum. Arthritis. The three sisters and my Daughter were among the first families to participate in a study by the Cleveland Clinic about Lupus (and related diseases) and the links to possible heredity. Don't let your doctors tell you it isn't hereditary. I can put you in touch with Dr. Brian Mandel who is the leading researcher in the country(he also specializes in pediatrics).

Yep, my friend died at 22. The good news is, the vast majority of lupus cases are controllable and may be a nuisance, but they probably won't kill you. I can't speak for isasir's friend, but the doctors characterized my friend's condition as about the worst it can be.
The other good news is that even with your wife's lupus, the odds are still stacked highly against your son having it; it occurs far less frequently in males.

Right now it's a waiting game to see just what, exactly, he has.

As for it being hereditary, rheumatoid arthritis has been proven to be hereditary, and they're related somewhat, though that's still sketchy.

I wasn't aware that lupus could kill! :Q Nothing I had read stated that! Crap. Now I'm all stressed about my wife AND my son. 🙁
 
i am sorry that he had to go through that... just keep a positive attitude for him, that will make a world of difference.
I am thinkin about him... and you're right, he should not have to deal with that at such a young age (nor at any age for that matter 🙁 )
 
90% of people with lupus do NOT die from it. It's a painful nuisance, but not fatal. I think you've either got it that bad, or you don't, so don't get too worried just yet.

My sister died of lupus at 27, her daughter (now 38) has it. Treatments have improved greatly and luckily her lifestyle has not been greatly altered.
