There's a flood of these things for sale now. Anybody using one? I have a low-budget friend that needs a bedroom Kodi box, and the sub-$30 price seems to good to be true.

Example: http://www.amazon.com/Android-Amlogic-64bits-Miracast-Pre-installed/dp/B01CZDSHRM

All of these 905 boxes seem to have the same basic specs, although I've seen mention of 2GB ram units.

Amlogic S905 Quad-Core Cortex-A53@2.0GHz
Penta-Core Mali-450@600MHz+
1gb ram, 8gb flash
HDMI 2.0 with CEC
Android 5.1 OS, support 1080P KODI Wifi
Hardward 3D graphics acceleration

My primary concerns would be more about basic stability and usability, not perfect playback or audio quality (40" bedroom TV...TV speakers!). Can a Harmony remote be programmed for one of these?

Just for running Kodi it should be fine. I wouldn't sell it on Netflix and a ton of other stuff though, it doesn't use the TV version of Android.

Can a Harmony remote be programmed for one of these?

Sure with a flirc. It has no built-in IR port. Smartphone apps are always an option too.

They actually come with an IR remote. Although I'd prefer a flirc, a $20 flirc is a tough sell on a $28 device. :(
