MX518 is dying, looking for thoughts on other mice

Right mouse button on my MX518 just died a couple days ago. It occasionally works, but its definitely broken. I've had the mouse for a very long time, it's no longer under the 3 year warranty, and I have certainly gotten my money's worth.

For a while I've been looking at upgrading to something newer, but either design or user complaints have kept me from upgrading. I really want to get a G5 v2 as its mostly an enhanced MX518, but it doesn't seem to be in production anymore. Seems like I just missed it, wish I had gone ahead and picked one up a while back. Watching a few unopened G5's on ebay. Prices from any vendors I can find online are kinda rediculous. I can get a G5 v1 for cheap no problem, but its useless with only 1 thumb button.

I've messed around with a G500 instore. I really like having a third thumb button available, but I didn't like the placement. I felt like trying to hit the middle thumb button I might sometimes hit the back thumb button too. In practice, is it really as much of an issue as I'm making it out to be? The new placement of the dpi adjustment buttons is nice, but not so important for me. I've also heard a lot about difficulty with the wheel button hitting the direction you intended.

Didn't like the feel of the G9.

I've considered dropping the extra money for a G700 or a Mamba, using the wired mode with my desktop then being able easily unplug right at the mouse and carry it along for use with my laptop. The extra buttons on the G700 are tempting even though I would rarely use them, and I have read user complaints about spotty wireless performance (problems registering movements, getting jumpy, etc.). I would like a third thumb button on the Mamba but I can live with the 2. However some users have complained about some pretty serious issues with the the mouse waking up from its sleep mode, and with profile settings resetting. I wouldn't be using the wireless a whole lot, and never when I'm at my desktop, but if I'm paying for it it had better work the way its supposed to. Has anybody experienced these issues? Or has the issue just been blown out of proportion by a small group of disgruntled users?

If I can't get my hands on a G5 I'll probably just get another MX518. It's served me perfectly so far. But if somebody can convince me that the G500 is a worthy upgrade then I might give it a go.

Thoughts?

The G700 hasn't gotten great reviews...

If you like the shape of the mouse, get the G500. The button issue is probably just you not being used to it. Make sure you buy from somewhere with a good return policy and try it for a week. If by the end of the week you feel like you could get used to it, then keep it. if not, return. You did miss a great Black Friday deal on newegg though, as they were going for 35 dollars freeship.

The G700 reviews were all mixed, some had issues that others didn't. Kept it open as an option in case any firmware updates fixed some issues, but I'm staying away from it right now.

I'll keep an eye on slickdeals for a G500 deal, and I'll probably grab another MX518 to use in the meantime. Won't hurt to have an extra mouse around either, and its relatively cheap.

I have the G500 and I never hit the thumb button by mistake when I'm trying to use the side buttons.

I got a g500. I like the feel and buttons a lot. I have always used MS mice in the past, and I feel that they work better in windows with the "enhance pointer precision" option than the logitech mice do. That said, the button placement is actually pretty easy to get used to and I came from an Intellimouse Explorer that had the primary button fail on me (would randomly click when I was holding the button to drag things.) It took me a few days to get used to it. I'm sure coming from an MX518 it will be even faster.

I vote get another MX518. I really haven't found a mouse that I'd replace mine with. There's a reason the MX518 is still in production 😀

I just switched from an MX518 to a G500 and am happy its very similar plus having the extra on the fly dpi adjustment is nice.

Another vote for the G500. I love mine.

I'm going to give the G700 a shot simply for the wireless freedom + micro USB charging, but I do have my doubts.

I am also in the market for a new mouse, i have been using a Razor copperhead for the last 2 years which i find to be really uncomfortable and the middle button now needs 2 tonnes of finger pressure to activate.

The thing about all these new mice is they have very radical shapes and buttons very close to each other, which makes them hard to evaluate without actually operating the mouse in person. All the shops i go to never have display models, leaving just your eyeballs to be the judge. That's how i fell into the trap of buying a Copperhead.

Too long has my wrist been bent and cramped from using this mouse, so i have decided i'm going back to my roots with a (Logitech Mx-1000) i know it doesen't have the insanely high Dpi rating of these new mice, but i have never held a more comfortable, smooth and responsive mouse. Having used one for 3 years without any latency/connectivity issues, even when applied to world level FPS i can safely rule out any negative impact from using the wireless technology as opposed to wired.

The only question that remains is, how similar is the M950 to the Mx-1000, and could it possibly be as comfortable with better hardware ? Anyone used these two mice that could give a comparison please post. ^^
