I'm just wondering which one of these mouses is better for gaming. Some of you like the wireless stuff but right now I'm using the MX510 and I like it a lot. Anybody think I should upgrade?

mx1000 has better technology but you shouldn't upgrade since you already have a 510, which is already excellent for gaming. unless you really want go wireless, stick with the 510 for now.

if you've got the cash to burn and the interest, go for it. I just bought an mx510 for my fiancees box, its just killer. I was reading a review of the mx1000 earlier...apparently you can use it on ANY surface since it has a laser instead of led, so if you want to use it on your nice, smooth desk, you shouldn't have any problems.

Personally I'm running an MX700 on an Xtrac optical mousepad (link). I got the giant 11x17" cloth optical mousepad - I'd say, buy that instead of an mx1000, give the technology some time to seep into the market and get some more reviews and get the bugs worked out if there are any. Xtrac also make credit-card thin pads (I have a regular size thin pad too) that works great - I just prefer the feel of a cloth pad.

I doubt it.

I think the mx1000 is ugly, I don't think I'll try it. Depending on the weather this weekend, I may go pickup a mx510 because my logitech 'optical wheel mouse' is old already... and at work I have a mx700 and I'm used to all the extra buttons. buttons buttons buttons!

Hey people,

can anybody tell me how i can make the extra buttons on the mx1000 work in games?

i tried uninstalling the logitech setpoint software, but in return to wolfenstein, it still won;t recognize the side and application buttons, and the tilting of the wheel.

the only thing that did work when i deinstalled, was the mouse3 (click on the wheel)

well if u set the button as a "keystroke" any game will use it. cuz some games won't recognize a key anymore if u set it to something like copy or paste. logitech should really create button profiles and stuff. for now logigamer is the alternative. dunno if it works with mx1000, it might

You doubt it? All they have to do is transfer the laser tech to the other mice, so yes, in essence, there will be a corded Mx1000.

I would stick with MX510. It looks better than MX1000 IMHO, plus it's a corded mouse - lighter, no necessity of charging, no potential lag in extreme situations due to cordless design. I'm a "pro" Q3 player and I use the combination of MX510 and Allsop Raindrop pad. It's fantastic. Perfect compromise of speed, accuracy and control. If someone offered me a combo of the most expensive mouse and pad (e.g. Icemat II + MX1000) for free, I would refuse and keep my MX510 and Raindrop... or accept the offer and earn some money by selling both items :)

BTW, 5.8 Mps and 800 cpi - MX1000 offers exactly the same specs as MX510. No relevant improvements.

I don't know if Logigamer would work, but give it a try and let us know :)

Perhaps you might be able to make the MX1000 corded manually, ala with a soldering iron, I did that with a ball mouse that was cordless, even got the PS2 slot to provide power (which was most of the work, it was pretty much just the transmitter plugged into the PS2 contacts). I'm not shure how delicate the insides of these high end mice are though, so be careful.

Even so, I would say that Logitech will be smart enough to make such a popular mouse corded also, it's nothing to do the redesign, and it will probobly be cheaper to Mfg.

Also, for a mousepad I've heard excelent things from RatPadz, I've even tried one (my brother is a fanboy. Yes, of a mousepad company.) and they are very nice, I don't know how long they last though. Very big though, like a placemat.

Did you read the same thing I did? Seems like the laser is an improvement.

Edit: I tried a RatPadz once...I hated it. Get a good cloth pad and be happy.

the laser is an improvement in that it can mouse on almost any surface, even a mirror (though they dont recommend it)
So unless you plan on using... you dog or something as a mousepad, the mx510 and mx1000 are technically even in precision.

Did you miss something too? It increases precision period..say, the mx1000 doesn't need a surface with visible or well defined variations.

Now regular light is what you call incoherent light. They are made up of many independent light waves. They also produce lights of many different colors. Laser, on the other hand, is coherent light. The light is made up of identical light waves and produce light of one color. Because of the nature of the laser, you can focus the light easier and in a smaller area than regular incoherent lights. A good example is shining a flashlight and a laser pointer. With a flashlight, you can see the light expand greatly as the surface you try to illuminate is farther away. The laser pointer is a lot more focused if you would shine it from the same distance.

The MX1000 does away with LED and uses a laser. The familiar red glow you have come to get to know and love is now gone. Using a laser illuminated surface, the mouse sensor can detect tiny changes on a surface that an LED illuminated surface cannot. It can see smaller imperfections in a surface. The peaks and valleys on a surface need not be as great when using a laser.

Yes. It SEEMS. MX510 is absolutely and entirely smooth movement and wonderful precision on my cloth pad, the Raindrop. I don't see how MX1000 could make any difference. You know, I screw theory like peaks, valleys, imperfections or similar nonsense, I know that practice is all that counts. I tried Boomslangs, Viper, many other mice. None of them gives me as good gaming experience as 510. To each his own though, I know some guys who love their 2000-2500 cpi Boomslangs. I detest their nervous movement.

As for pads, I tried them all: plastic (Func, Ricochet), steel (Steelpad), glass (Icemat)... I don't like them. Cloth > all but again - this is my opinion, some other people might love Icemat or Ricochet.

If you have a good pad, MX1000 isn't worth the extra money in comparison to MX510. If you don't, it MIGHT be...

both the mx510 and mx1000 are 800dpi/5.8megapixel mice. So what am I missing here.... the greater "precision" that the laser provides is that it can detect smaller variations on the surface it is passing so you can use a wider variety of surfaces. It doesn't magically make the dpi increase.

and if the battery performance is anything like the mx700/900 then towards the last 1/4 of battery life left of each charge the responsiveness will feel laggy. I've used a MX700 for a few months and I had 2 sets of AA batteries I rotated between in emergencies and whenever I popped in a fully charged pair of batteries the mouse's responsiveness felt a lot quicker than when it was running on a pair of batteries that have been used for a week.

Dude..I don't give a sh!t what you use or how awesome you are with it, this discussion isn't about that. I was merely pointing out what you guys either didn't see or didn't mention.

No one said it made the dpi increase GnomeCop..wtf.

The MX510 is a great gaming mouse, there's no reason to get the MX1000 now unless you need the wireless.

Uhh...I believe the discussion changed when Schadenfroh asked " will there be a corded version of the MX1000? ". It never had to do with "Dump your MX510 and get a MX1000." .

Get a grip guys, our MX5xx series mice are good, ok? No one is saying they arent.

tried it. it askes for mouseware software, no prob, isntalled setpoint, but if i run logigamer after that, i get "object not defined" errors on every mouse movement in the logigamer screen. seems like it doesn;t communicate with The new setpoint software to well.. damn!
