Mx Revolution or G7?

Hey, I just got a Logitech G7 last week, but I Saw the MX Revolution came out. I need a wireless mouse that'll be good for gaming. That's why I got the G7. But is the MX Revolution, the new mouse, and better than the G7?

The revolution has that coolness factor to it. It also has forward/ reverse thumb button which the G7 lacks and it also an extra thumb scroll wheel. :Q.

Nice toy but at $99. ouch

I've never used one, but first impressions tell me that the thumb scroller may get awkward while gaming.

Since you already own a G7, I'm sure there's no benefit to upgrade to the Revolution with gaming.. and I never had any first hand experience with the Revolution, but it doesn't look too appealing to me nor does it have any real, good features that I would like that my G7 doesn't have.

I just picked up the Logitech MX Revolution. I'm coming from a Mx1000 and I'm a pretty involved gamer.

The new weighted scroll wheel is amazing for web surfing. It also has an intersting mode that allows you to turn it into an scroll wheel with the detents, like a standard mouse. The problem is that you don't want the scroll to be free spinning during a game, especially if you use the wheel for weapon selection, but it's easy enough to select the detent mode.

The side psuedo wheel is interesting but I haven't found much use for it yet. I downloaded the uberOptions software for it which basically mods the XML files to allow more mouse button binding options in Setpoint. It's not fully ready for the MX Revolution yet, but it does recognize it. The side wheel has 5 "buttons" assigned to it. They are as follows...

- tap forward
- hold forward
- click (down motion)
- tap back
- hold back

I think once the uberOptions gets updated properly all these new buttons will have some use for gaming and everyday use. At least it's better than the G_ series which doesn't even have the extra button options.

The main problem, as I see it, with the MX Revolution is the middle mouse button no longer exists. Middle mouse click is now used to toggle between free-spinning and detent-spinning modes. This makes Firefox a bit unusual as I'm used to the 'open in new tab' function. You can bind middle mouse to the button right behind it though, which I may do in the end.

Coming from a long list of Logitech mice, the most recent the MX518, I have to say the MXRev is a lot more comfortable, however for me it's also a lot heavier, which is taking time for me to adjust to, I'd say it's 2x as heavy as the MX518.

Battery life is "ok" first charge I got about 6 days out of it, and that is with heavy usage, my friends who also are heavy gamers say they get about 2 weeks out of their mx1000.

It charges pretty fast, full charge in a couple of hours.

Gaming, i've having trouble binding the thumb buttons in games like BF2 and 2142 Beta, however that might be a setpoint issue that can be easily fixed, though i've been unable to fix it yet.

The rubber "sliders" on the bottom of this mouse are very very smooth, as opposed to the hard plastic "sliders" on the MX518, it makes managing the extra weight easier.

If some sort of software can be released to make all the buttons fully bindable, i'd say this mouse is the best on the market, the thumb slider is kinda just for show, but in a game where reflexes are less important, like say an RTS game, it might come in handy, it's not really a button you can get to in a hurry, maybe with some practice you could.

Generally speaking, if you enjoyed the MX1000, G5, G7 or any other similar mice, you will love the way the Revolution feels. I admit though, this is not a mouse for gaming. However, it should prove good enough if it's the only mouse you have handy. Here are a couple reasons I feel that this shouldn't be used as a gaming mouse unless you can help it:

>More sensitive scroll wheel is 'bound' to get you killed.

>The search and app switcher buttons could get you booted from a game unless you disable them.

>Doesn't give you the ultimate control as you'd expect with a gaming mouse.

>No DPI on-the-fly

That being said, this is not a gaming mouse or marketed as such. This is a desktop mouse that caters to all of your daily computing needs.

By far... Logitech Trackman Marble. Get used to it and you will NEVER want to go back. Pulling a 180 turn in an FPS without moving your arms is wonderful.

I have to disagree with those points.

DPI on the fly is overrated, for me at least, I never used it with my 518, although I can see how it would be useful, I just never used it.

The more sensitive scroll wheel is not a problem, in fact it's an asset, in the 2142 Beta I found myself picking weapons with the scroll wheel fast and accurate.

Search button takes significant effort to press, I highly doubt it someone would press it by mistake.

The App switcher would also take significant effort to press accidentally.

The single biggest problem right now with the Revolution from a gaming perspective is the lack of proper binding software.

I can't even bind the thumb buttons in game.
