mwave CPU+mobo combo cooling and OCing questions...

Hey guys,

My TBird 1Ghz and Asus A7V 133 combo from MWave arrived today, but I'm a bit concerned about the heatsink...It is nameless (The box just says "CPU Cooler" and has an artic mountain scene on it...The only other markings on it of intrest are the "ISO 9002 Certified" label and two stickers "For AMD/TBird 1.2G" and "5E26B3"--is this heatsink acceptable? It appears to be all alluminum and it has a "fanner tech company" fan.


Also, should I use the thermal pad included, or should I go to Radioshack and get some thermal paste? I read someone on here say that you can remove the pads with a warm fan, anyone else try this?


Finally, I am interested in raising the FSB to 266--do I need to unlock the processor (it is locked) before I do this?

I think if your not overclocking that HSF is an okay solution. I used a generic hsf similar to that and it cooled my 750@1050 tbird pretty well. If that is a 100 mhz version tbird then overclocking to 133 fsb would make it a 1330 cpu and I think that is overkill for that HSF. Get a Globalwin, Alpha, Hedgehog or the Taisol forged hsf.

The answer is probably no to it being unlocked. And you should invest in better heatsink/fan combo even if you don't overclock. T-birds run hot, the processor can take it better than the other components in your case. The processor is rated at max 90C. But I am willing to bet a fast video card (Geforce, Radeon) can't take the heat and you will get problems when a game pushes it. And a few case fans would be a good idea too. The fresher the air that the heatsink uses the cooler it will keep processor and therefore less heat given off.
