last week, i bid on a used dell 21" flatscreen with trinitron tubes, with my high bid as 185. i really wanted this item cause it was in austin, and i wouldn't have to pay shipping on it. then, with 20 seconds left, someone sniped me with 30 seconds left and won the auction at $187.50 :( then, the same seller, puts up another one of these, with it ending today. so, i watch it carefully, and snipe it with 2 seconds left and win at $187.50 :):):):)

who knew that 187.50 was such a good number?!?!

anyway, i did it all manually, baby! no crappy software to do it for me! i haven't sniped an auction in a long time (i've been around on ebay since 97), and forgot how good it feels =)

that's what ebay is about... sniping other people's high bid and beat them in the last 10 seconds...

I've never wanted something off ebay badly enough to snipe for it.

Not necessarily.

All too often, people get caught up in wanting the item, so when you proxy bid early.. it just inflates the price even more.

Sniping in the last seconds is the only way to do it. ;)

I have been outbid with literally 1 second left. MEH!

I do a combination of both. I put in my proxy bid during the last few seconds. Why hasn't everyone figured that out?

It seems ridiculous to me that people spend hours trading ebay bids back and forth outbidding each other by $.25 or $.50 increments. What a waste of time. They also have to stay glued to their computer and watch to see that they are still the high bidder (and also watch out for bid snipers.)

This is how I bid an ebay auction. :)

I see the item, figure out exactly the maximum I am willing to pay for the item, enter that price in and hope for the best. This way I am completely safe from people bid sniping, unless they are willing to pay more for the item than I am. In that case, it was never meant to be and I won't lose any sleep over not winning the auction.
I also don't have to stay glued to the computer......I just come home and see whether or not I won the auction.

what are you talking about ?
you don't have to sit glued to the computer. You can see when the auction ends, come back like 5-10 min before and just bid on it on time before it ends.

That works with some categorys, but with some things.. like antiques, one of a kind items, or things that you really need.. it doesen't work the same way(in the minds of the bidders).

Well if I want an item and I'll pay a maximum of $35 for it, I could care less when I put in the bid or if some lil bitch outbids me with 2 seconds to go. I'd rather do that than hit refresh 10 times a minute with a minute left

Ha! I bid for something at the very beginning, and no one else bid for it - hence, I won it at the lowest price possible! HA!

What is this 'software' you talk about? I know about proxy bidding but is there something that will keep track?

Proxy bidding sucks and is NOT sniping, use an auction sniper such as auctionstealer.com

AuctionStealer.com has been up and down a lot lately (supposedly hacked), my wife now uses JustSnipe.com which is also FREE and reliable.

bidding yourself is never *really* sniping, at least to me.

sniping is good for things you can get again, but if it's a rarity I like to bid near the end and get a feel just in case I may need to bid unrealistically.

There has been at least two auctions I bid more than I would have sniped at by a large margin because I was upped and upped way early.

A good example was one item that sold at $350 new yet went to $2k and I lost with a $750 bid (I am still looking now although I took 2 years off).

Regular items snipe at a fair price, if you fail snipe the next one, repeat eventually you will hit it esp. if it's common in completed items.
