Why would they voluntarily increase operating expenses when revenue didn't suffer the first time?

I thought the whole point to dedicated servers was decreasing expenses since the playerbase becomes the buyer and operator of servers?

Anyhow, it's obvious why they do it. They want to control each game's multiplayer lifetime.

Ah that makes much more sense.

Who the hell is surprised by this? They are going to a subscription based multiplayer experience. There's no way they'll ever do dedicated servers again, they want you to pay money.

More lulz. Still enough people will buy it so that it will be very profitable and that's a sad thing.

Well now the COD player base has seen what player hosting is like with MW2, and they've seen now much better dedicated servers are in Black Ops (not counting 1st 2 weeks of release), so I think a lot more people are going to be pissed about this than last time.

IMO the reason is simply to save dev time by making the PC version exactly like the console version. If this costs them a few sales on their least profitable platform then no big deal.

Not likely, but charging people $60 a year is almost like a subscription.

I believe Activision is on record as stating CoD multiplayer will always be free, take that for what you will.

I logged 175 hours into MW2, it was my first CoD game since the original CoD and the excellent expansion CoD UO. I loved MW2, yes it had hackers but they were easy to spot and you could simply leave the game and join another one. There were no lag issues at all, however I tended to get host a lot (5MB up).

So I don't know, in general I prefer dedicated servers however there is something awesome about just starting a game and clicking "Play" and the game finding the best match for you. Neither system is perfect, and both of them are susceptible to hackers.

MW2's greatest failing was in Infinity Ward's refusal to patch the imbalances out of it, not the matchmaking system. One Man Army + noob tube - are you serious? Why was this never patched...

Humor me...what exactly does MW do for servers/matchmaking and how does that compare to dedicated servers?

Individual players in the game act as the 'server'. It's called being the host of the game, and it creates a pretty huge advantage.

I don't really see how this matters. BO had dedicated servers and there was still cheating and hacking. Plus the people that really care about such things haven't been buying CoD anyway, so they have no real incentive to change things. The people they get to buy these games are going to buy them regardless.

Glad I got a chance to see how crappy MW2 was so I don't waste my money on MW3.

I could meh less. More important issue is whether the game will run fine on PC...Black Ops anyone?

I can thankfully say I have not given them a cent since COD4.

I enjoyed the COD$ single player, but the multiplayer is unrefined and boring. I don't like spawning out of someones ass and then shooting them and I don't like that happening to me either.

Man, I'd never really played COD multiplayer until I tried the free blackops weekend this morning. Makes you really appreciate Battlefield, even BC2, though it's not going to stop me from crusading against 3D spotting and killcam.

However, are there any major stylistic gameplay differences between Black Ops and the Modern Warfare series?

you can do that in BC2, there is a play now buttont that finds a low ping server with an open slot and drops you in

I hate that they wont change anything for the better, but they rake it in, so why try harder

What do you mean not likely? They already announced their bs multiplayer service crap. People that don't pay and participate will get left out and eventually be compelled to pay to be in the competitive games. Activision will give non-payers some retard version of multiplayer that nobody will want to play. It's coming and why dedicated servers are long dead for cod. The only reason blops doesn't have it is because it wasn't quite ready yet.
