MW2 + Steam...why??

So I just got MW2 for Christmas and damn...you have to link it with your steam account which = no selling it on Ebay. Since the advent of computer games I've been buying, playing, and selling with no care in the world. Why then do computer gamers get jacked? I mean console players can still sell their games but PC ones are stuck with it forever it seems. I hope this is not the road the industry is going down, but to combat piracy I think it is...frustrating.
 
I know. It kinda sucks with any game thats on steam for that reason.

The only way to bypass this is to make a new account for each steam game. You could do that.

Then you can sell that account. Of course this does violate their terms but...I dont care about that personally.

Online activation and account-based DRMs are to stop second hand sales as much as piracy.

In fact, some game publishers consider people who buy used games pirates, too.

Seriously though. There are much more dire forms of DRM, stop crying already.

Look at it this way OP, at least you won't need your discs in your drive and if you ever lose them you just download the media from Steam again. It's not that bad! I agree the whole not selling thing does stink, however I bet MW2 is one of those that has single player that is worth hanging onto!

I just finished my install of MW2 while typing this post.

This is why the only things I buy on steam are either stuff I know I will always play, or stuff on sale cheap enough not to give a shit about (eg: $5 games).

Let's see... counting the games I picked up from D2D (which I count the same as I would Steam in this case), Civ4 Complete, World in Conflict Gold, Battlestations Pacific - all $5 games. Wouldn't quite call them "shit games". Picked up Stalker the other day for $2.49. Left 4 Dead a few weeks back when it was $7.50. Etc.

I agree half the indie games aren't worth their $5 tag, but I'm talking about the real sales, not the indie games.

I understand your point of view but I have never "lost" install discs in my life. Also, single player games are fun to me only the first time through. Everything from HL2 to MW1 to Dragon Age...very fun the first time around but I just don't replay games. Same goes for movies too but that's just a personality trait.

Either way I'm mainly bitching at the comparison between Console games to PC ones...the disparity does not have to exist when it comes to reselling.
 
Consoles have been infinitely more successful in managing to require you to have the disc in the drive to play the game. It's been so completely unsuccessful on the PC as to be laughable at best.


At any rate, market forces have changed the medium. You'll have to adjust - you can't resell cable tv, and everyone gets on just fine.
 
I prefer to buy games cheap and not worry about selling them later. Same with my college textbooks. I get them online for about 1/5th of the bookstore price and then I dont care if it will be bought back at the end of the semester. It was so darn cheap it wont fudge up my budget.

I think folks need to start looking at PC Gaming differently. DRM is here to stay, and it will probably be more invasive as time goes on. STEAM is probably the best because it lets you access your games wherever you go and removes the disc requirement for darn near everything.
If you are willing to let downloads go all night while you sleep, you can actually have multiple games installed in less time than it takes to go to the store, buy the disc, come home, and install it.
And you dont have to keep track of Keycodes either.
Given the reliability of internet access these days, the concept of Cloud gaming isnt so bad. (For those of you who scoff at my notion of reliable internet, you have not seen the days of dial-up and Gopher. Things are far superior nowadays.)
 
You forget that this generation of consoles have downloadable games (eg. purchased through Xbox Live or PSN) that, AFAIK, cannot be resold either. I don't resell pc games so this isn't such an issue for me. Plus, i love steam. Btw, Amazon has CoD:MW2 for pc on sale for today for $40. not sure i should pick it up w/ all the negative feedback and the fact that i'm interested to see how Battlefield Bad Company 2 turns out.
 
This is pretty much why I only buy multiplayer PC games I know I will play a lot.

If there is a single-player game I really want to play I get it on 360 then sell it when I am done.

I agree, the disparity between consoles and pc games is very irritating. I try to look at the bright side, not having to get up from my chair to get a game off my shelf does make me feel a little better though!
 
the most frustrating part of it is Steam could easily let you sell it if they wanted. They have the whole gifting games thing already set up, it would be easy for them to let you digitally gift a game you already own to someone else and deactivate it from you.

Why would they deprive themselves a revenue stream in the name of allowing you to resell your games? It's different with books, furniture, cars etc because they wear out. But if I can go on steam and get a digital copy of a new game for $40 or a "used" one for $20, which am I going to pick? It's the same 1's and 0's so you would be retarded to buy the new copy.

I understand why they won't, but it still sucks. But to your point, I don't think they need to give you a way to sell them, but to allow individuals to give their copy to other accounts if they want. In no way should they set it up where you put your games for sale on their site. But if I want to give you my game, I should be able to do it, and we work out money on our own.
 
well other MP games tie up the game to your specific account too. EA ties up BF games to your EA account email and you can't really sell it unless you're okay with giving your EA account too.
 
Do that many people really sell games? I mean, every Steam thread is full of bitching about "oh I can't sell my games" but do people actually do that? Is the second hand market so big that it should be tolerated for all this whining? I have never bought a second hand PC game. And come to think of it, I've never bought a second hand console game either.

Few board games I've purchased off the second hand market though. Never complete though. Imagine a game of Scrabble where you're missing and "A"! Ridiculous!
 
i'd definitely sell some of my steam games that i never touch even if it was for just few bucks (if they made it easy like their gifting system). i have steam games i never ever play anymore. TF2, L4D1, and bunch of other games i got during sales.
