Muting the Wiimote

Should be somewhere in the console settings from the main menu. I don't have one so I don't know exactly where, but I do know it's possible.
 
It may work at the main menu but, when when in a game, press the home key. The settings for the wii remote are in the screen that pops up. You can adjust the volume level of the wii remote as well as the vibration.

x2, it pops up on the bottom of the screen and click it, it pops up with volume on the top with a plus and minus.
