Drivetrain is pretty solid. There do tend to be some rattles and squeaks with the interior. Overall they are reliable though. The problem is really that they tend to attract young owners who beat on them and don't care for them as well as they might, which causes issues from abuse.

The 96 is a dog. 215HP V8 - blech. Don't waste your time.
P.S. Mufflers and a shifter are not "bolt-ons." That thing isn't any faster than it was stock.

did the '96 really only make 215 HP?
The 4.6 SOHC powerplant installed in the Town Car in 1996 made 210 HP (in dual exhaust form). The engine is identical to the mustangs V8, but I thought it was de-tuned.

engine wise they are solid. The cars do rattle and hum and make some noise, but nothing too horrible.
I have a 2000GT with the 5 spd manual with 55k, original owner and knock on wood no major problems yet.
I would go with the manual. The automatics saps some of the power.

All I have to say is, only buy cars like this if you know how to work on them. That car has beat beat on, ridden hard and put away wet many times.

Stay away from the '96 -'98 GT's & '94 -'98 V6's
94' & '95's have the old 5.0L motor and can be modified pretty easily. It's a stout motor.
In '99 Ford swithced to a 190HP 3.8L V6. They are very reliable.
I like the body styling prior to '99, just my opinion of course.
Overall they are easy to work on, parts are cheap, and they are relaible. The interiors are horrendous and cramped. Stock manual shifters suck ass as well. For decent sound get the Mach 460 system.

The 92 Camaro Z28 weighed around 3200 lb with a 245HP/345TQ tire-shredding 5.7L V8. The torque curve looked backwards to most cars today - all the power was down low and ran out of breath above 4K RPM. That car ran a 14s quarter mile, but 0-60 was in the mid-5s range IIRC. A modern mid-sized sedan with a stout V6 can run the same times given traction (FWD FTL).
The 96 Mustang GT weighs around 3000 lb with a less powerful engine than the Camaro.
Yes, it is slow as a dog. Buy a fourth-gen F-Body with an LS1 (started in 98) and call it a day.
03' GT convertible here, with 90k miles on it. Never done anything to it, but change the oil and other routine maintenance. Runs perfectly still, leather is still in very good shape. Overall, looks a whole lot younger than 90k.
It's a "pony car". Sporty styling and image, affordable, decent power.
Really the beauty of the Mustangs is the aftermarket...you can upgrade everything on them for fairly cheap, and a correctly modded car can usually hold its own against anything stock.
People worry way too much about anything slightly interesting having been beat on. Unless the last owner was an 18 year old punk I wouldn't worry too much about it. My 60 year old father has an 02 mustang GT. I know he doesn't beat on his

The whole pony car thing is outdated. We have no real muscle cars (big blocks) any more.
The Mustang is about as close to a muscle car today as you can get from a production line up.
The IRS ones are decent on the track but overall the car is still highly unbalanced.
